In a world of commercial break magic, and instant gratification on social media, this is just a little reminder that good design doesn’t happen in a day.
It’s not easy, with the snap of a finger. Or an instagram filter. Or a scripted TV show.
We’re slowly being brainwashed, if we’re not careful. Because we’re surrounded by it.
If there’s anything we’ve known to be true over the years in our own homes and those of our clients, good design and the entire process, really takes time. But mostly, it takes patience.
It requires months of planning.
Then rounds of revisions {depending on the space and client}.
Partnerships and more planning. Schedules and coordination, overseeing work and following through on all the little details.
Teams of solid, dependable people to move forward with the plans.
Sometimes we hit hiccups like a kitchen leak or something missed by the previous owners. Or that ever-present human factor. So then it takes pivoting and more patience.
Good design takes teamwork and understanding, people management and problem solving.
We actually have a ton going on in the background that we’re not always able to share here, until later. So if it feels like there’s a delay on our site with what we’re sharing, it’s because our job is multifaceted and constantly evolving; it’s relationships and communication and organization.
Good design doesn’t happen in a day. Our own fixer upper home has taken years, and is still a part of a little story, slowly unfolding. It’s the antithesis of perfection and that presto change-o people are always looking for. Behind these before and afters we love to share, the old adage is true: blood, sweat and tears made it happen. We’re also doing life in the meantime, just like everyone else. So every time you see a space we share, know that it included months of design work, teams of good people, great partnerships with incredible brands and lots of patience from everyone based on timing, permits, and an endless barrage of curve-ball variables.
Implementing that good design comes down to hard work.
We just wanted this to serve as a gentle reminder when it comes to your own home. In case you feel flooded with perfect images everywhere from social media to magazines. We’re certainly not wizards, and sometimes we’re at the mercy of sheer fate when it comes down to a space we are lucky enough to share here. Just like an artist can become lost in their painting when they stand too close, it’s good to take a step back every once and a while to breathe, and shift your perspective.
So today was just a little reminder… forget the instant changes on social media or commercial breaks where nothing goes wrong and the design is completed in an instant. There is always so much more to the story. And that’s where the good stuff really is.
Because good design doesn’t happen in a day.
