When we were first married, we were babes. Naive and young and in for a rude awakening, babes. I mean, my prince had just galloped off into the sunset with me in his arms, and now he would take care of me, right? ::Cue the eye rolls::
In the first few months of marriage, I was faced with another rude awakening… and that was a little something called a budget. A real live bonafide, we have got to make this work, or we will live in a van down by the river, budget. So we cut corners at the places where it made sense… fancy was a date night that involved the movies once in a blue moon after stopping by Sonic, and we had a little envelope system for everything.
One of the areas we decided to cut back on, was my hair.
I know. I can hear the collective gasps. You’ve probably been there.
But I was kind of a high maintenance gal in the sense that I’d always had my hair done professionally. At a salon. My Dad tried to warn Jamin as to what he was in for. But we just wanted to play house. And make out. And stuff. I thought it would be like in the movies where I would cut his hair, and he would hilight mine. All to a musical montage like a great 80’s movie by John Hughes. And we would kiss and laugh and dance to music in our little apartment before going to bed. We would wake up the next morning looking like rockstars.
So I decided it must be easy, and Jamin could do it. We didn’t need an envelope system of cash for the hair. The hair would pay for itself. We were young and smart and savvy.
The only problem was, that Jamin, as you may have guessed, is not a hair stylist. Because bless him, he tried. So when I picked up that box that promised both lowlights and highlights and all the great dimension you see on the celebrity hair commercials {who, for the record, you know don’t use the box stuff… am I right?!} in between all the drama from Days of Our Lives and Passions {Anyone else guilty?} It made sense to try it.
Oh, let’s not forget, I’d already butchered his hair. He came out looking like Moe from The Three Stooges.
So, as I am sure you can see where I’m going with this… he was a little confused when he pulled off the cap {after I sweet talked him into doing said hair} and it was red. White. And. Blue. And not the good kind someone could pull off in the olympics this summer. Like faded out, weird, hues in odd places.
And let’s not forget, this was 2002. There was no pulling it off to be had.
This was the cry heard round the world. And after that, I few of the funds were moved from various places, into an official hair envelope.
We may not eat that week, but Mrs. Mills was looking fabulous.
I kid. Maybe.
I learned a valuable lesson in that first year of marriage. {After the third time, and having it repaired professionally…} it was that enough was enough, and if that I would splurge on one thing for the rest of my life, it would be my hair. So we scrounged and saved and I had it professionally done.
And they lived happily ever after.
And I’ve always felt that way. That it’s worth the one treat for yourself, to have great products for your hair. Because if your hair is rocking, you can rule the world, right?
If I’m being completely honest, when NuMe sent us some of their product, I was a little nervous.
Clearly, I’m not a stylist. And while I do believe in great products for the hair, I was a little bashful. I mean, this gal has changed a lot in 14 years, and while I still pay to have my hair fabulously done, the most effort you see me put into it is a messy bun and yoga pants. I guess you could say reality hit after three kids and running a business. Besides the occasional getting gussied up, I’m not exactly into photo shoots.
And I was always frustrated with trying to curl my hair. I couldn’t get it like everyone else. They always have these amazing waves and my hair ended up looking a little like Nellie Oleson from Little House on The Prarie.
But I do still believe in a little of the treat yo self department going a long way, that we can all relate to. So when I see an amazing deal on something, with a great opportunity that’s worth it, I have to try it… and if it’s great… I share.
And Emerson was all in. If the girl is not an artist or stylist of some kind, I will be completely shocked. And so a stylist day we had… a mommy daughter afternoon, trying out their amazing product. She was in stylist heaven.
They sent us both The Pearl Curling Wand + the 25 MM classic wand.
Along with some of their awesome Argan Oil to try, as well.
I guess I’m always looking for something low maintenance, that goes a long way. So we simply wrapped our hair {using the glove to protect our hand from the heat} around the wand. It heated quickly, and I loved the fact that there wasn’t a clamp to cause more frazzled strands or tangles.
Here’s how we used it… refresh if the video isn’t loading because it explains it perfectly.
And to be fair, here are both of our befores.
Emmy has very fine hair. And lots of it. I had her hair before I had babies. And now mine is randomly wavy and does this when I blow dry it.
It’s kind of a hand full.
But after using their wand and a smidgeon of the oil to smooth down the fly aways…
I was amazed at how easy it was to use.
I had these awesome beachy waves.
Take that, Nellie Oleson. Take that.
And Emerson was thrilled with what she calls her “mermaid hair”. She’s always begging me to curl her hair and there’s just never enough time. Using the NuMe was actually fast and easy.
I’m always looking for something that’s easy peasy, with a big impact. For both of us.
And we were thrilled with the low maintenance outcome!
This is kind of our new favorite little tool.

This is hysterical. I had the husband do my hair too when we were newlyweds and it didn’t turn out too well. You and your daughter are precious
