Updated: we have a winner! Congratulations, Jen! We hope you enjoy your sweet prize. And special thanks to The Home Depot, Maytag + P&G for this amazing giveaway!

Hello lovelies! Today, we’re back to share a bit more of our laundry room, and a few tips and tricks for making the never ending chore that is laundry… easier! {Stay tuned for the giveaway, below!}

We all know that getting our laundry done can be a total pain in the patookie. I’m also pretty sure it’s my number one complaint when it comes to all things household management. It’s the job that never ends.

Did you know that the average family does around 400 loads of laundry each year?

kitchen_table

I don’t know about you guys, but this is not surprising at all to us. It can be a little overwhelming, to say the least. Today, I thought I’d share a few tips and tricks about our laundry room that we love … because sometimes, it’s the little things.

before_laundry_room

1. Make it light.

Or darken it, or add color, or whatever it takes to get you to love your laundry room. We started out in a builder’s beige nightmare dream. {Sometimes, I feel like people love various shades of brown a little much in our neck of the woods.} This was before we were really ‘going for it’ in our home, and we lived with it this way for a few years. Finally enough was enough, and we decided to make a change.

laundry_room_reveal

If you hate your laundry room, it can make the daunting task of laundry a bit less than inspiring. With a little elbow grease, we decided that it was time to change things up a bit.

I realize that we were very fortunate to have lots of cabinets in our laundry room. This gives us lots of storage, but because of that, it was also very dark and cavernous.

DIY_refinishing_cabinets

So operation lighten and brighten was on for us. We were so tired of that dark, overwhelming brown that we painted our cabinets and gave our walls a fresh coat of fun blue.

It totally changed the way I looked at our space.

how_to_board_and_batten

We also added some board and batten for a timeless/farmhouse, clean kind of old school feel.

And before we knew it, our laundry room was a lot more appealing for us. Sure, our laundry still piles up occasionally. That’s life. But it gives me the incentive to keep the room looking fresh. We even removed a door which was really cutting off the space, visually. It opens right off of our kitchen and makes everything feel roomier so we keep it clean (most of the time… since everyone and their grandmother can see it).

2. Make it fun.

Beyond those initial paint and color changes, we added personal touches that up the ante in the looks department. Who says you have to follow “the rules” for a laundry room? Honestly guys… I am too sexy for my laundry. (Who isn’t?!) And I like a fuzzy rug for a shot of welcoming color and something comfy under my toes.

I'm_too_sexy_for_my_laundry

I love touches of art in unexpected places.

laundry_room_makeover

And I even revamped a bit of a mid-century fabulous gold chandy with some spray paint {on the candles} to add some swag for a fun, not-so-typical-modern look.

chandy_candleslaundry_room_chandelier

Don’t worry… we just relocated the old one, because once it was hanging, our chain was too short. (We have more on that coming soon. But to read up on how to install a chandelier, be sure to click on over here.)

laundry_room_art

Add personal touches that you love, and you’ll feel so much better about that never-ending chore. Because we all know ignoring it, won’t make it go away.

organization_laundry

3. Make it efficient

Again, this will be different for everyone. But for me, it’s the little things. I was so super tired of lifting the giant jugs of detergent that were as large as me over my head to reach my HE washer and dryer. #firstworldproblems. So I decided to make it visually appealing, and easy to access by using drink holders. We love it.

laundry_detergent

Our laundry room doubles as a mud room. And triples as craft storage. And though this room is generous, everything is valuable real estate in our home with our family of five. This space is essential.

{Just this year, we did a super purge and organized everything in sight}. Since our kitchen is full of open cabinets, we decided to take advantage of the storage space, here.

organized_drawer

Also, we used hooks to designate a drop zone, and it’s totally changed the way our family uses this room. This wall is so simple, but it’s one of my favorite places in our home. No more tossed jumbles of book bags.

laundry_room_board_and_batten

laundry_room_hooks

We also try to keep the counters clear, so that I can fold and organize as needed in this space. This means corralling similar items into baskets, and keeping it as-in-control as I can in the meantime.

See that painted slab of MDF on top of my sink? It gives me more counter space when I’m not using it. Again – the little things.

laundry_room_ideaslaundry_room_white_cabinets

So there we are! Just a few things that work for our family. No, not everyone wants an antique ironing board. Maybe it’s not the most useful thing in the whole entire world. But I think it’s gorgeous in its own way. So there it will stay.

Our laundry room is adequate. It’s not fantastic, but there is a some storage, a sink, and a counter to fold laundry on. I’d love to create something magical. With 3 kids, I’m in the laundry room all day doing laundry, and it’s not very inspiring or welcoming. I’d love a chance to change that 🙂

Your laundry room is fabulous, just like the rest of your house. Love the light and bright and all of the great little details. My laundry room is tiny and needs a huge overhaul, it’s on my list. I’d use the $500 to work on our home office where we’re planning on building a wall of bookshelves and desk. $500 would really help my shoestring budget. 🙂

I would so love to use that giftcard to put towards new counters or a light fixture for our kitchen. I have to admit I think I have the seven year itch… we’ve been in our home for seven years. And although there’s nothing “wrong” with anything… updates would be spectacular… and a chance to make the place more “us” would be so great!

I wish I had a laundry room to refinish – all we’ve got is a washer and dryer up on cinderblocks in our basement. But it’s a big improvement from havign to traipse down three flights of stairs to the shared laundry room at the old apartment! With $500 for Home Depot, I think I’d use it to by quarter-round to occompany our floor molding, not to mention new tiles for our kitchen floor and sunroom, and some beadboard for the kitchen backsplash, and, and…we just moved in, I could go on and on, haha!

My laundry room is a long skinny hallway with the dreaded wire shelves (why do they install them at giant’s height??!!). Id yank those babies down and put up some stock cabinets with shelves in between. We need storage solutions like mad, so we’d use that giftcard up fast!!

  62. Lauren says

    August 9, 2013 at 9:28 am

What couldn’t I do with it? Hmm I’d definitely be needing some paint….various rooms in our house need brightening up. And then plants! I love plants, and I would love to fill the patio with them. And then maybe grab a little spray paint for a certain chair that needs help. So fun!

  63. Stephanie R says

    August 9, 2013 at 9:28 am

We’re moving in a couple of weeks, so I have a lot of projects coming up. I’d love to use that $500 gift card to update the kitchen – gray paint for the cabinets, white backsplash and new paint for the walls.

  64. Sarah (SophieBugsMom) says

    August 9, 2013 at 9:28 am

There is way too much I could use the $500 for! Paint for my bathroom… want to add board and batten to my master bedroom, mulch for the front yard, new lighting for my master bedroom, replace the tools my teenage son lost over the summer from his various projects, etc etc etc.

My laundry room is so small. I would get estimates on how to expand it into our family room (I would have to move a wall, it might not be possible). But a girl can dream. If that didn’t work, I would add some covered storage above the washer and dryer and a sorting area. THANK YOU!

Ahh I love your laundry room. That red rug drew me in and now I must.have.it! I love that it’s bright, casual, and says “hey, come stand on me while you throw your clothes in the washer” — well, ya know…if rugs talked! LOL!

Anyhow, this post is about laundry rooms and not rugs, so I’ll bring it back around and make it relevant. So… umm that $500 gift card would be about 500 shades of awesomesauce! Especially since my beloved washer got banged up in the move and the door won’t close (RIP washer). So yea, those $500 smackaroos would definitely come in handy and be put to good use. My sister and I are complete opposites. Given me an art supply shop or bookstore. Give her Home Depot. She can spend hours in there, looking at tools, fixtures, raw materials and “parts” (as she calls them). She lives in a small town in Idaho where there is not much employment, and she lives in reduces circumstances. She lives a very rugged life, making/building most things herself, from the clothes she wears to the barn she is just finishing in the back yard. I can think of nothing that would make her happier than a gift card to Home Depot, and no one who would put it to better use. If I got the card, it would go to her.

I would move our washer and dryer back from the garage into the laundry room. A few years ago, when my son was born, we moved it into the garage as a temporary fix to use the space as a workstation. Now that I have the luxury of being a stay at home momm, my work consists of lots of laundry! Doing it in the garage gives me the heebie-geebies. I know. #firstworldproblems.

I would use the funds to repair many unsightly items in the kitchen. Like replace missing drawers, repair drawers so they can open easier, replace old blinds, re-finish cabinets, change cabinet pulls, replace hood and dishwasher. I know this may not be enough to finish the project, but its a start to the kitchen looking nice. 🙂

Yes, I do alot of laundry…I am wife and mother to 5 sons, I’d say I probably do about 10 loads per week, like you said, it’s never-ending. That and food or related chores, I really enjoy it though, I have lots of blessings to count. I will totally agree on the lighting, you have to have lots of great lighting. If it’s too dark and dingy nobody would want to go in there. My room is in progress…it’s in our unfinished basement. It will also double as a craft room. The ironing board is the best part, I have my grandmothers wooden ironing board and I can’t imagine ironing on anything else. The newer metal ones seem too flimsy. I sort of feel a connection to my grandma in heaven when I use it. Maybe that sounds weird, but as mothers we all have to stick together. Gotta get back to one of my many loads, Toodles!

    Laundry, Schmaundry!
I live in a 1939 bungalow. The laundry room is situated in the “darkness” speaks my 7 year old. Really, it is in a finished basement and it has lots of potential. Its uses consist of laundry, storage and garage all in one. Garage, you say? Skis, bicycles, golf clubs, and uhmmm……linens. I’m embarrassed, but what can I say? 1939 didn’t require the “stuff” we have now, to fit in a garage. I need to purge and then….$500 for an upright storage shelving unit, a washer (the current one is from 1979 and has lived in 6 states) and a can of Benjamin Moore Paint. (still deciding between grays!)

So I’d buy some kitchen cabinets, countertops and a fridge. I currently don’t have a fridge, I’m using a little student fridge at the moment. I just went to Home Depot last week and bought paint for my laundry room. A little Chantilly Lace (per the influence of the Mills fam!) on the doors, Woodlawn Blue on the walls, and some extra white paint I had laying around for the ceiling….it’s a whole new room. Seriously. Some much brighter and spacious feeling. So much better than the weird green of the paneling and the yellowed ceiling. What’s next? I hope a new floor! That’s what I would do if I won.

Oh, and a new light (right now we just have a fluorescent tube office/garage/workshop-type fixture…it’s hawttt =P). Lastly, I want to install an electrical outlet in there. Who builds a laundry/garage entry/pantry space without ONE. SINGLE. OUTLET?! Anyway…mildly ambitious??? 🙂

P.S. I’m using a tablet to read your blog, which means that touchscreen scrolling occasionally results in accidental clicking on things. I don’t know what I accidentally clicked, because I was mid-scrolling-reading, but I was somewhere near the top of the page (so maybe it was the text based ad at the top of the sidebar?). We just bought a new/older home that was flipped, but though we got a decent deal on it, it came with a very large slew of major projects needing to be done. Beginning with the yard, but also including our laundry room. And the garage. So I’d definitely use that gift card for one of those things. 🙂 Going to share this contest now.

  445. Miranda says

With that gift card I would finally clean up my laundry room (for real). It’s in the darkest, dirtiest hole in our home (a 1950 ranch) and has absolutely no personality with its (poorly) painted cinderblock walls (from the previous owners) that are the foundation of the house, and the cement floor with no ceiling, exposing all the wires and floor joists for the floor above. To make this a place I’d actually want to do laundry would be wonderful! Think of all the laundry I would actually do! Rather than just throw it down the dark chute never to be seen again. 😉

  446. Angela says

    August 9, 2013 at 10:28 pm

Your laundry room looks great. The rug is such a fun pop of color and patter. If I won the gift card, I would buy shelving! We have gutted our laundry room and widened it a bit to make room for a pantry in there. Can’t wait for al those shelves!

How fun! I love everything you did! Unfortunately we currently live in a rental home, but this is the first place I have lived (married) that has an actual laundry room instead of laundry closet! I however, have no sense of using it to its fullest potential! I would love to use the gift card to help me organize it better as with too little ones, laundry is a constant around here and I would love to make it more efficient!

  458. Katie says

I would use the gc to makeover my laundry space. It’s been way down low on the to do list for a long time. We have a little bitty laundry closet that looks almost the same as when we moved in 9 years ago wih the exception of adding a bunch of crap. It’s boring builder beige with wire shelving. While it does the job it would be nice to have it pretty too!
