Joni from Lay Baby Lay is here today, to share a few rooms in her home with us. And let me just give you a preface: you’re gonna love it!
A fellow graphic designer, and mommy of a sweet baby girl, I love seeing how artist mommies transform their homes.
I’m sure many of you have seen her incredible nursery. We have the same golden wings! {squeee!}
When Joni isn’t on this incredible blog of hers, she’s working at the cleverly named Chocolate Butterbean, where you can find her brilliant work. So, without futher ramblings from yours truly…take it away, Joni!
Hello, there, I am Joni from Lay Baby Lay. I was thrilled when Ashley asked me to guest post on her beautiful blog, and she recommended I share some of the spaces in my house. I found it to be a great excuse to finish up a few lingering projects that have been on my list, so without further ado, I hope you will enjoy this peek into a little more of our home!
The first room when you walk in the front door is the living room. I love this bright, happy room with large windows across the front. We keep the TV in another room off to the side, so this room is reserved for having company, enjoying a fire, playing music, and conversation. Chip loves music and plays guitar, so he has his guitars displayed on the wall. Vivi loves to watch him play, and she is fascinated by the strings and the noise! One of my favorite things about this room is the coffee table, which we co-designed and built (or really, I more watched him build and picked out the wood pieces) with my father.
The living room opens to the dining room in the back of the house. I love having a “formal” dining space where everyone can sit at the table and fellowship. My father also helped me build this table and re-finish and re-cover the chairs, so it’s another handmade treasure. This room was formerly a bright persimmon color, but we re-painted it a creamy white with a blue ceiling when we put Vivi’s nursery together. Our house isn’t very large, and you can see most of the rooms from wherever you are in the house.
Last, I’ll show you the kitchen. We took out the upper cabinets last summer and replaced them with open shelving, which had been a dream of mine since seeing an open kitchen in a Domino magazine years ago. I love the end result! The small room is much more open, and it is extra fun to cook, because everything is within easy reach. It also keeps me extra motivated to keep things very neat and put away. Once again, my father helped us with this project and custom built the hutch to house baby items, which I was certain would be numerous. I think this is Vivi’s favorite room in the house to play – maybe it’s the black and white floor – but it seems to keep her entertained the best!
As we are navigating this new life with a baby, and as she becomes increasingly more mobile, there will be things that have to change as we have quite a few toddler traps. I’m excited about the challenge of re-thinking some of the details in the house, and plan to share them on my blog as we make the space more toddler-friendly without compromising the feel of our house. Thank you so much for stopping by!

Great curtain idea….I have added to the bottom before but never thought about a valence on the top! Your dining room is fabulous! Thank you both for sharing.
Laurie says
what a great eye you have! love the collected art on the walls the best I think, but I seriously need your dad to help me with a coffee table. đ
Allison says
Your house is gorgeous and filled with so much character and personality. You’ve done an amazing job! The kitchen is fabulous and fun! You ought to be featured in a magazine! What color did you paint your walls in the living room?
Joni says
Thanks for the sweet comments, y’all! Allison, the paint color is Diving Board Blue by Martha Stewart, from when her paints were available at Lowe’s. Now they are at Home Depot so the colors are a bit different, but it’s closest to Enamelware (although it has a bit less green in it).
Heather says
Love how eclectic everything is!
Alexis says
Oh, I’m in LOVE! According to your living room, I think we could totally be friends đ Your walls look like the same colour mine have been for quite a while but I’m wondering if it’s just the monitor. Are they a light aqua? And I’m also so happy to see your room because I love the eclectic traditional/modern look but since I got a Persian rug I have found it’s been too traditional/formal and I haven’t been able to add any quirkiness (for lack of better word) to it. But now that I’ve seen your living room, I am inspired! Thanks!

I absolutely love all the attention to detail combined with cozy comfort. It IS gorgeous, but in such a friendly way. My favorite room is definitely the dining room – the stained glass piece is so beautiful, even without sunlight coming through, and I LOVE the chairs! Are they metal, and were they originally office chairs? Hard to tell, but they look great!
Joni says
Thanks so much, Sarah! The chairs are old military chairs – my dad helped me find them and get them sand blasted and powder coated and then we recovered the cushions.

Holy crackers! I LOOOOVE this home! Joni, you are one talented woman!
lauren says
I love – EVERYTHING! Where did you get your record player? I;ve been looking for one and love the style!
Joni says
Hi Lauren!
Thanks so much! I bought it from Urban Outfitters and it doesn’t look like they carry the same model currently, but the brand is a Crosley. We love it, and it’s so much fun to have!
Susan says
I really love the wall color in the nursery!! What is the name of the paint color?
Joni says
Thanks so much, Susan! The color is aqua glow by Benjamin Moore. Hope that helps.:)
Katie says
LOVE this house – the living room rug is my dream rug, so perfect. Also, definitely one of my fav nurseries on the internet! But my very favorite thing is the “She&Him” quote – did you make that Joni? If not, where can a fan like me get one? đ Thanks!
Joni says
Thanks, Katie!:) I love She & Him! Yes, I made it – it’s shiny gold vinyl on a bright green board. Feel free to email me if you want one!
Katie says
Cool, thanks! I might just have to email you soon! đ

Your home is amazing! I love all the creative tableaus that combine masculine and feminine touches! I especially like the stained glass hung on the dining room wall. I’ve often seen beautiful glass panels at flea markets and such, but hesitate to buy them without a place to put them. Next time, I won’t resist the urge to purchase one! Thanks for the inspiration! (PS…Vivi’s nursery makes me want to have a baby just so I can decorate my own nursery…so beautiful!)
BrieAnn says
Lovely. We have a similar style, but you are so more put together than I am! Your dining table is amazing, and can we talk about where you got your living room rug? We moved into our house 9 months ago, and I’m still searching for “the one.”
Vanessa says
What is the paint color on your kitchen walls? I love it!
Jennifer says
I desperately need to replicate that beautiful nursery of Lay Baby Lay. Please, please tell me what color paint that is and where you got the black and white rug!! It’s the exact room I wanted to do for my baby girl. Thank you-Jen
