When a sweet client named Leah came to us for a few master suite ideas, we were more than thrilled to put our heads together to help with a little inspiration.
Master bedrooms are so important, and often left by the wayside in lieu of main living areas and children’s spaces… because that’s life. But they’re so important for so many reasons. Even if just for a sweet escape and feeling more peaceful. It can be a luxury for anyone, no matter where they are in their phase of life ;} so I’m always thrilled when someone tells us they want to do their bedroom because people so often put it last, and it very well may be the most important space they can do just for them.
Leah’s specific requests were a sitting area, new bed, and a place for the television, along with a place to display the existing artwork for sentimental reasons. We enjoy a good mix in a space, with our investment pieces, as well as our bargain finds… and if they’re super pricey, I always like to offer an alternative to that as well. We also love the fact that a room is so much more than just the pretty stuff, where the functionality is equally important. So without further ado, here’s what we came up with!
5. Paint
She’d already decked out her room with Sherwin William’s Agreeable Gray in the space, which looks so pretty… so good choice! Also, the way they already have the furniture arranged in the space, makes the most sense to us, as far as a basic configuration… especially if they want to keep the doorways and walkways easily accessible.
1. Windows
We love the idea of taking blinds to fake out the eye, from the top of the ceiling, down. It will automatically make their ceilings feel taller. Then with a fun sheer curtain panel, to add a little romance, we would swoop it to the side, to make the window appear more intentional, and the entire space, a little less limited.
We would add the same type of blind to their door, as well to add some interesting texture. If privacy is an issue {I’m not sure what’s on the other side of that door- neighbors?} there are lined options, as well.
6. The bed
Another way to open up their space, is by choosing a headboard that has a charming older feel but also stays pretty open. That way it’s not completely blocking their window. We love this super simple headboard and the open feel that it gives the room. This way, the bed and window look more deliberate and planned out… and we’re with you on the king size bed thing. It’s one of those non-compromiseable things. HA! We also like the idea of not having a footboard to help your room feel larger and open.
For the bedding, we adore this duvet cover in white for a nice, classic staple piece. It helps to build off of a simple palette. With this quilt at the foot of the bed for another touch of color, to tie all their pieces together.
We love two of these pillows, paired with one of these {the large one is a bit of a splurge, but we adore the global, colorful feel it brings to the space in tying all the fun vibes and colors together.}
8. Rug
A nice, fluffy rug under foot is always a great idea. We’d go for the largest possible, and pull it out about one third of the way from underneath the bed, so you still have plenty of it on the floor that you can see since a king sized bed can take up most of the room. {For an example, see our bedroom, here} It’s a nice clean neutral so that they can build off of it later if they ever tire of these colors. If there’s one place to get away with a light rug, it’s the bedroom because it’s less likely to be tracked up.
We always bring in the other pieces first, and then measure. That way there’s no regrettable rug purchases ;}
5. Side tables
These are actually small dressers for more storage, but when we took a look at the widths, these should fit in their space. We think one on each side would help make the space feel a bit more anchored, and symmetrical. We also love the idea of pairing them with these classic lamps, and a cute little clock like this for an accessory. We love the idea of their art and meaningful things from their wedding on one side, stacked just as they are now since the other side has a window, and would love to see it in two custom frames to tie them together.
We have a how to for those {we love that you’re up for some DIY, because we feel like that’s the best way to get the most customized look for your home}, here.
9. Dresser area
Since they wanted to keep the TV in the space, we thought more of a “shelved” feel would work to help pull it all together and make it look intentional.
We found this dresser and we know it’s a bit of a splurge for their space. Also know that this would be an easy look to duplicate if you decide to go the DIY route, and paint their own find. The one they have now, may be just the ticket with a sanding and painting /new hardware for major new look.
We thought the dresser, paired with a pair of shelves like this, would help give them more storage, and since their TV is in a bedroom, we’d love to see it framed out to pull it together with the “built in” feel like this.
We thought some baskets {we pulled an example from here} to help store some of your items would pretty much double the storage they already have for clothing and odds and ends. Though surprisingly {and depending on what shelving they decide to go with} we’ve had better luck price-wise by shopping locally. You never know what major discounted ones you can find. We hope this look helps get them started!
2 + 3 Seating
They mentioned seating for their space, so we thought that the area where they currently have a bench, would be a fun place to splurge with a sofa. It’s a great chance to bring in a shot of color, that maybe they wouldn’t normally use {though they also have other color options}. Either way, a nice corner topped off with more fun pillows in the same color genre, are sure to cozy it up for your own special corner.
Sitting spaces in a master are luxurious so we love this idea.
A mirror on this wall, since we’ve replaced the “traditional” mirror area with a television, would be a great effortless way to add more light, and space to their room.
There are also plenty of antique mirrors to be found at flea markets, so you never know what you’ll find and it’s a great opportunity to bring in that old, found item that truly enriches the space. It would be a charming addition for sure, to find something old in brass.
4. The Chandelier
We adore this light, as it brings in some major character to the space. It’s a great way to top it off with that finishing touch.
