I snapped this photo a little over a year ago, when driving through the countryside of Franklin. It was so striking, we had to stop. While it’s a gorgeous backdrop of all things retro Americana that I adore, it’s also a beautiful reminder that freedom isn’t free.
It can be easy to take the everyday for granted if we’re not mindful. So it’s important to pause and appreciate the seemingly mundane things, both big and small, that were paid for with a price we can’t even really begin to comprehend.
Today we’re so very grateful to all those who paid such a price and we wish you a meaningful Memorial Day.

That photo of the deteriorating barn, the neglected old pickup and motorcycle, and the huge flag, weathering slowly away, looks like the whole thing is a shrine to some beloved son who didn’t come home, doesn’t it? So sad. I bought a horse once from a man whose son died in one of the Middle East conflicts – the entire farmstead felt engulfed in a fog of grief and dashed plans…Almost all the members of my family who have fought for America over the centuries made it home to their families, but their service left an impact which echoes down through generations. I am grateful for a formal day of remembrance.
