Happy Wednesday, all! We’re all on the mend from our recent bout with the virus, and I hope all of you are having a great week!
A sweet reader wrote in the other day and asked if I have a work room, or a space specifically sanctioned off as a place where I create, in our home. And that answer would be no. {Cue downtrodden face.} But on the bright side, my entire home is kind of my studio, yes? So on any average day you’ll find me in the dining room sewing and piecing together projects-In the kitchen or garage for a plethora painting projects…and I can usually be found at the kitchen bar or hidden away in the dining room when I’m seeking secret refuge from the kiddos, hen-pecking away at my latest post.
A space of my own {This could very easily be the title of a musical} is a bit of a fledgling future plan of mine-even if it’s against a small wall in our current home. Sure, don’t we all have expectations of that perfect space just for us, filled to the brim with supplies galore? (Forget the diamond ring, honey. I’ll take a studio. {But I wouldn’t complain about a diamond ring either. Just sayin’.}) Here’s a few of my ideas for a super small workspace.
1. I would love a desk with a shelving unit made a lot like this one. This just so happens to be a desk + bookshelf pieced together a-la photoshop from Ballard. But I think I may be able to bribe my welder friend into making one for me? {Read: pay him} Stay tuned!
2. I would love it paired with a nice, classic comfy chair like this one. I’ll probably start searching, but this isn’t a bad alternative, either.
3. An inspiring pillow always helps. For when I take naps. In my chair. In front of my nonexistent desk. Roll with it. 4. This adorable lamp would provide some much needed light. 5. I heart this poster. And it’s very true. Available here. 6. I just ordered some similar baskets like this from decor steals. {formerly wuslu} and these great flower pots from Ikea, originally mentioned here. 7. Of course, with limited space, it’s practical to go super functional, but who wouldn’t love a vintage typewriter? 8. Jute bags like this would be a great versatile space saver. And some clever DIY boxes like these, here would be the perfect embellishment. 9. This vintage clock. It doesn’t need an explanation. 10. Everyone needs a little happy on their desk. I’m a self-professed snacking machine. And I love the color these books would bring to the space.
Yes Please!
Here’s to no. project no. 5554 on my list. It never hurts to think ahead. That way, by the time I get to it, it’s been refined in my head. ;} What do you use for your workspace? Is it on the fly like yours truly, or do you have your own room dedicated to such absolute fabulousness? I’d love to hear…and see! Shoot those photos my way!
Have an inspired day, everyone!

Love it! I have those IKEA pots all over my house and use one of the large ones to hold all of my cooking utensils. I feel like I need to buy like 100 more before they quit carrying them š

I don’t have a space YET –to we gave up the square footage for a separate study when we bought this house six months ago because we loved the location. So I had kind of given up on having a project/writing space. But we just turned a walk-in closet into, and a short-term nursery for Baby #3 and I realized that when Baby moves in with big brother I could nab the closet. Plans are forming! š

I like the way you think, girl! ;}

jI hope you didn’t all have the voms again, Ashley. Glad to hear you’re all getting better. I think the lamp you posted is possibly the cutest one I’ve ever seen! I don’t have a good work space myself but I do have a yarn room, so I guess that kind of qualifies..?? thanks for the darling ideas.

A yarn room sounds like so much fun! Thank you Dorothy! No voms. Just back aches and chills…but it only lasted for about a day and then left me weak-I think I’d rather go that route than a sinus infection. Those things last for weeks and they’re what I ALWAYS get! BOOOOOO.

Ashley,
What program or app do you use for your Moodboards? I’ve used Moodboard but don’t know to trim and crop my pics so there’s no background. Of course, I am completely lacking in computer skills, so it could be the operator.
Thanks!

I am new to all your fabulous designer blog and love the way you post these “idea board” type photos. How do you make those?
ashley @ the handmade home says
Hey Ladies! I’m a graphic designer by trade, so I use a combination of photoshop and illustrator for my boards. Taking out the background is a lot more work {to do inspiration boards for people, it takes about a day and a half to put them together with the entire process of writing, linking, research, and design} but it’s well worth all the extra work. I hope that helps a little! ;}

I love this post! I am at a stalemate with our “study”. It’s halfway furnished, and not decorated at all. We don’t have the money to really do it up like I’d love to, and I’m at a loss as to what we really “need” for the space, as far as storage, etc, is concerned. BUT I love the look & feel of this inspiration. Thank you!! Also, there is a vintage office chair resembling the one shown here at J&G’s flea market! š I’ve been eyeing it for awhile now but have no plans to actually purchase it. You should get it! š
