With two working parents at home, it’s been quite the feat to keep three, a-little-bit-older kiddos busy this summer. It’s been a really fun summer – in fact, we kind of voted it the “best summer yet” for our house. But on those rainy days, or stagnantly hot days or the days when they’re a little mopey, it’s been nice to pull a few tried and true tricks out of our pockets for entertainment value. Something in the craft arena like tassel necklaces for kids other than Netflix, is always a good option. {Unless we want to watch Netflix, too, of course. Because sorry not sorry, but snuggles and Netflix on a rare lazy day is always in a win in our book.}
Tassel Necklaces for Kids – Christmas in July
But we’re thrilled to be back today with Nashville’s Talk of the Town this morning! I {Ashley (+ Emerson too!)} am doing another little snippet with the fabulously talented Meryll Rose + Lelan Statom in their studio today. And we’re happy to be back again on the news, sharing a little bit about the fun we like to have on rainy days with all things colorful tassel necklaces for kids. Think Christmas in July and great gift ideas and all things Santa hats.
And if I’m being super honest, these great tassel necklaces for kids, are totally for adults, too.
Because when in Rome, and since I would probably steal these from Emerson anyway, I needed some of my own. Since we’ve written about these before, you can find our original post here. But we had a fun little crafting afternoon, making some necklaces {and bracelets} for ourselves.
P.S. Can someone please put a brick on her head and make her stop growing?
Tassel Necklaces for Kids – Supplies you’ll need
If you’re interested in making some of your own, here’s what you’ll need:
• Simple hemp/ twine of your choice {Let’s be honest, these don’t require anything fancy as far as clasps, and hemp holds up fabulously with simple necklaces like these}
• Beads from around our house
•Embroidery thread of various colors
• Old chains/necklaces you may want to add in on the fun, too {or some for the craft store, depending on what you want to make}
• Scissors
Let me just start by saying that tassels are so addictive.
They’re basically the next put-a-bird-on-it situation around our house. From pillows , to gift toppers and even keychains, they’re like the gift that just keeps giving. And you know we love them with our free planner {nerd alert}. I’m currently on the hunt for a poolside umbrella with giant tassels a-la 1965 but squirrel and digression.
Tassel Necklaces for Kids – Step 1. Gather Your Twine
So, the first step is quite simple: gather your twine to your desired length and have fun creating your necklace or bracelet of choice.
Cheater’s alert: we picked up a few pre-made bracelets at the craft store with fancy clasps so all we had to do was add the tassels. But we had fun creating our own little bead combos with necklaces, too.
Tassel Necklaces for Kids – Step 2. Make The Tassels
The steps to create a tassel really are as easy as 1,2,3.
I guess you could also call this the cheater’s guide because apparently we love cheating on the little things. Gather any embroidery thread of your choice, and place your finger through the top loop. Tie off that portion {as seen in the first grouping.}
Next, put another thread around the entire section of the top, as shown on the second grouping.
And thirdly, trim to your desired length. Tada! You have a tassel. And before you know it, you won’t be able to stop.
Tassel Necklaces for Kids – Step 3. Add Your Jewelry
Then you’re finished with your tassel, find the area where you’d like to add it to your jewelry, and tie it on.
Trim it up, and you’re done!
But back to the tassels, because you can even double up with multiple amounts of embroidery thread.
For the one below, we did two together.
We sent the thread through two loops, and tied it off at the top.
Then secured the top portion, and added some thread around that, too. But not before we added a few decorative beads through the top.
Then we trimmed it up and we had a double-fluffed rainbow tassel!
For a tri-color tassel, pick any of your choice.
It always helps to put your finger through the top, to make sure all the loops of each grouping of thread are together.
Bring your thread through the top and secure it with a knot.
Remember, don’t trim that part just yet, because you’ll use it to add to your necklace.
Tie the top portion with another thread to make the “tassel” shape.
Then trim, and add it to your necklace.
I usually do this by finding the centermost part of my necklace, and tying it in the middle.
And of course, use the other end of the embroidery thread for even more tassels. Because tassels.
Cheater’s tip no. 3: I even trim up my tassels with a smaller pair of scissors by giving it a little haircut.
You may want to do that over time, too.
And there you have it! Hours of fun with just a few simple steps.
These are perfect for simple gift giving, and some rainy day kinda fun, too.
As always, let us know if you decide to make some. We’d love to see.
And we hope you’ll tune in today on NC5’s Talk of the Town!
We’d love to see you there.
Have an inspired day!
