We’ve had quite a few rainy afternoons lately, and since we’re all about indoor options that don’t involve something that rhymes with finedaft… or all the other never-ending plethora of media infused entertainment, we thought we’d put together a little art project: marbleized jewelry for kids.
The kiddos had an absolute blast, {as did the oh so curious pups who thought that the clay was for their consumption.} Here’s a bit of what we made:
marbleized beads,
bracelets and rings,
and monogram / heart necklaces.
The possibilities are fabulously endless!
Here’s what we used:
• Polymer clay in any shade you like • small clay or cookie cutters of any shape {we used premo sculpey mini metal cutters + clay cutter alphabet set • a roll of hemp • toothpicks • a rolling pin to flatten the clay {and foil + a cookie sheet for baking the clay}
Here’s how we made what we made:
Depending on what color combos you want, combine them and mash them with your fingers, until you have the desired swirl, then mold them to your shape.
To make beads:
Take the swirly combo and roll it into a long snake. Trim it off at the ends, or roll it into a ball {depending on the shape you want} and poke a generously sized hole into the middle with your toothpick.
Let it bake according to the directions, and you have your beads to create endless combos of creations.
To make rings or bracelets: just take the snake from above, and flatten it with a rolling pin or other flat surface. Size it to your wrist, or finger and lay it sideways to bake.
Tada! Beads, necklaces, bracelets and rings galore.
To make any shape of necklace, simply take your marbleized concoction and flatten it. Cut it with any shape and after placing holes for jewelry with your toothpick, bake.
We attached two holes in each heart, and threaded it with the hemp to make the coolest summertime necklaces ever.
And for the monogram necklaces, we simply used cutters in their letter of choice, placing a hole in them before baking for the very same thing.
We just looped the hemp through, and they have these super cute personalized necklaces.
Something tells me we’ll be visiting this project again and again this summer…
Today Emerson made a marbleized table for her dollhouse and it was so cool, I kind of wanted one in real life.
The boys have already moved on to making characters, too.
The perfect afternoon project with endless possibilities!
As always, let us know if you try it – the perfect little summer activity for rainy afternoons!
Have an inspired day!
This is perfect… We are always looking for ideas this summer- can’t wait to try this with the kids!
Doing this tomorrow! Thanks!
