Hey guys! We’re thrilled to be back with another installation of our video series today! We’re back discussing tips and tricks for designing a small bathroom.
We’ve tackled a few of these smaller baths lately, and in the process, we know that a lot of people have questions on how to best utilize their spaces. So we figured we’d share some of our very best advice, and discuss all the elements for designing a small bathroom!
Without futher ado…
So here are a few of our very favorite tips when it comes to all things big impact with designing a small bathroom.
• Go big on character – see this bathroom reveal here
Designing A Small Bathroom – Don’t Skimp
Because it’s small, it doesn’t mean you need, or have to skimp when designing a small bathroom. In fact, we say go big or go home. It can be with the use of tile for a big impact. Fun colors in a smaller space to go bold or brighten it up. Or even wallpaper on the walls, to bring in some major character.
There are so many possibilities that can make your design for a small bath oh so exciting.
Designing A Small Bathroom – Don’t Skimp
If you can’t do glass, look into a great shower curtain that brings in major style. There are so many fun options out there for both adult and kid spaces. We’re in the middle of bringing in a design for two bathrooms, with that very idea – for both practical and money saving purposes.
Be sure to add some towels that add a lot of color and personality. It’s often a forgotten element and a missed opportunity for even more fun in a small space.
Fun bath mats certainly serve as unexpected statement pieces, and it’s something we love to include. Sometimes, it’s in the very simplest of options.
Designing A Small Bathroom – The Art
But we have to say as always, art is definitely one of our favorites for a huge impact piece.
You don’t have to treat it like a bathroom, and the unexpected additions are the very best.
Let your bath reflect you, and you’ll love whatever you choose! No matter what the size.
• Think a little differently when it comes to installing materials – see this bath here + our barrier free bath, here
Can you take glass all the way across? When it comes to glass, it always helps make the space feel larger. If you minimize as many visual obstructions as possible, it can be a real game changer for the feel of the space.
Can you tile it all the way to the top to make the space feel larger and add height to the space?
Are there little ways and places to bring in detail and personality that take it to the next level… like the tiny details in a wall pocket, or an amazing border for instance.
Just because it’s small, certainly doesn’t mean that it needs to be boring. Little changes beyond the “norm” can make a huge difference!
It’s an opportunity to bring in so many fun elements that definitely make it your own, and unique to you.
• Don’t skimp on storage {or hooks} – see the rest of this bath, here
Think differently when it comes to utilizing the space.
If it’s small, make sure the space works hard for you. A clean, organized space is truly the best when it comes to feeling really good about something. You’ll love your small bath even more if you know you’ve really considered every single possibility and taken advantage of what works for you.
Think towel towers, vanities that offer a lot of storage on the inside {and if not, add a shelf on the inside for easy storage} shelving over the toilet, or a ladder for a towel bar in a tight space.
How about hooks for towels so that you can hang more? Get creative with those ideas in stylish ways, so that they work nicely for you!
• Mirrors and lighting are essential – See our baths here and here + this half bath here
Think in terms of major style for big impact in a small space. Mirrors and lighting are oh so important for lightening and brightening everything. They’re like clever accessories that take an outfit from good to great.
No window? No problem. This is your opportunity to make your bathroom seem bigger and brighter. And if not, you’ll be so distracted by the pretty elements you’ve chosen… it won’t matter. ;}
• On the practical side… See this bath here.
We also wanted to add a little to the practical side of all things renovations.
Use lots of ventilation. For example: a vented light in your shower helps with moisture and problems over time. It even works as {bonus!} a nice soft light at night for kiddos who might need a nightlight.
Consider your doors. They can save space if you change them from the typical opening, and free up hidden wall space you may not have considered before. From barn to pocket, there are a lot of stylish options to help you think through just what it is that you need.
At the end of the day, make that small bath feel like an escape. Make it feel like a spa. Even if it’s just your hallway half bath.
There is so much major character to be had in small ways.
You’ll love spending time in there when it’s made just for you.
We hope you guys enjoyed our small bathroom tips and tricks, and if you’re considering a small bath renovation, make it something that you truly love! Have you taken on a small bath renovation? We’d love to hear your fave ideas!
Have an inspired day!

I like how you stated just because it’s small, it doesn’t mean you need or have to skimp when designing a small bathroom. I just moved into a new house and it has a really small bathroom in the basement that I don’t know how I should decorate it. I will definitely utilize your tips when decorating my bathroom.
