Growing up, every time St. Patty’s day came around, I was pretty diligent about donning my green at school. I mean, I didn’t want to get pinched, or anything. It was kind of a big deal. The older I got, the more I realized I could totally hone in on this ‘Kiss Me, I’m Irish’ thing. I mean, someone should kiss me, right? Cue teenage girl hopes and angst. Wheeeeee!
a touch of green with our tea towels!
That didn’t come until much much later. I was kind of a late bloomer. Maybe I’m still waiting to bloom… I’m not really sure. Life is hard. Anyway, my mom always told me we’re Scottish/Irish, so I always felt a bit of an allegiance to the day. Didn’t they fight? Did we have some kind of Romeo and Juliet scenario going on in our past? Something for our heritage, which I admittedly knew nothing about. I believe it’s time to dig into the family tree thing.
the book is always better children’s tee
So cut to me, waking in the bed this morning, and only after checking my phone do I realize that it is in fact, St. Patrick’s Day. Pretty much because someone mentioned it on Facebook. I figured the actual reason why we celebrate would be a great topic in the whole homeschool gig today, and that I should totally turn the toilets green. Please tell me we’re not the only ones who do this? It’s likened to other exhausting obligations like Elf on the Shelf, but it’s worth it in my book because they buy into it every time {even the ten year old – I still can’t decide if he’s just humoring me at this point-the jokes on me} and it’s only once.

So, in my pjs, before anyone was up, I did this odd ninja combo of a tip/toe scramble into the kitchen. And climbed the shelf to grab that food coloring. Everything was still dark so I had to be careful not to blow my cover. No, not the red… that would be terrifying. The green. Is that green or blue? Cue old lady squinting in early morning light… And then I pulled off the olympian equivalent to a back tuck roll ceiling crawl to each bathroom, to dabble a few drops and turn the water green. Which is actually pretty gross… the lengths we go to as parents. I then feigned oblivion, crouched and waiting at the computer for it to be discovered.

Only, apparently, our kids have bladders of steel, and I rehhhhhheally had to go. But I wanted them to discover it. Thus the conundrum I’d unknowingly created for myself {and Jamin} this morning. He’d also found the green and knew he’d better wait until someone discovered it, because after thirteen years of marriage he knew I’d totally been a wizard ninja and that makes me ten kinds of amazing because school topic and learning and green toilets and other things I’m sure I can come up with here to justify my insanity in a massive run on sentence. So here we were, doing the special dance like three year olds,in the corners of the house, waiting on our children to discover green food coloring in the toilet. What is wrong with us? I have no idea.

About thirty minutes later, I’d already started in on the coffee rounds of the a.m…. thinking it wouldn’t be that much of a wait. And I was in big trouble. Not just a little trouble. Big. All three kiddos were awake. There they were, lazing around like it was a Saturday morning. Who are these alien creatures with bladders of steel, we questioned. Right along with our sanity. What have we done?!
because it’s been one of those months
Finally, I gave up. I walked into the hallway bathroom with a theatrical gasp: “Why is the water green?! What on earth is happening?!” And they all sprinted around, suddenly awake, as if someone had infused them with coffee this morning. Amused and baffled all at the same time… A leprechaun was here! A leprechaun was here! The toilets are green!? How did they do that?
YAY! I gave an enthused reaction and then pretty much shoved them out the door. Mama had to go. Silly traditions for the day… and bodily needs… accomplished.
