So we’ve started to reel it in on all things unpacking.
And by reel it in, I mean we’re not drowning in boxes anymore. Kind of.
Because keyword: Started to. Between a few deadlines we had, along with traveling for Thanksgiving, things have been tricky around here. It doesn’t help that progress is complicated by my skewed priorities. I mean, hey… I can’t find my underwear or the shampoo, but the kids room is done! Wheeeee!
It gave me comfort and made me not feel like such a mom fail. No judging. So while nothing is hanging on the walls… I can walk around a little without risk of death by cardboard box avalanche. At least that’s the goal after today. And the basement is a different story.
But in the meantime, around the house we’ve been all about the little things that make it more homey.
I mean, if I’m going to crawl over boxes, and stub my toe on everything around me… at least it can smell good. There’s nothing like celebrating our new home and the season of all things happy {and tricking yourself into thinking its actually fresh and clean} with a fantastic scent.
We’re kind of candle freaks. Anyone else out there like us?
What we hadn’t thought about, was what kind of candles we’ve been using.
So when my long time friend Brooke {Remember the ones with the kitchen redo {Parts 1, 2, & 3 here ? We have an update coming up soon on all their progress – you’re going to love what they’ve done!} mentioned she’d been working on a bit of a project this past spring, I was curious.
And when she said it was candles, I had to try them out. And when I tried them out… It was one of those products that I wanted to shout from the rooftops. Because they’re awesome.
Union + Dixie is the name of her company – And this is from her site because she says it way better than I ever could:
As a candle maker, I’m obsessed with quality. As an nurse anesthetist, I live and breathe health. Literally. That’s why my candles are only pure, clean-burning coconut wax, without the toxins found in paraffin and soy candles. And no beeswax, so they’re 100% vegan friendly.
The woman knows her stuff.
At first I was all, okay… And then it made me realize I wasn’t really paying attention all the time. It can be so easy to get caught up in life, and neglect the process of really thinking through what we bring into our homes.
With our entire house remodel, it was a bit of an eye opener. I’ve come to a clearer realization that everything we do, has an impact on something else. It was something I already knew, illustrated in a bigger way. Jamin and I want to be more intentional with that impact. From gutting out older items in our home that weren’t so healthy anymore, to who we work with, to the pieces we brought back in… and even making sure the old {reusable} pieces were rehabbed and had a good home to go to, everything is affected by our choices.
Shouldn’t we consider the little ones, too? It’s something I hadn’t thought about… especially not with candles in our home.
Brooke really has considered so much with these beautiful candles, and her intentional choices shine through: from the health benefits, to the stunning packaging and presentation. As a home lover and graphic designer, {read: total nerd} that wasn’t lost on me. It’s like her passion was packaged into each of these little gems, and she gets to share them with the world.
Of course we love it, because there’s nothing neater.
And while we’re at it, isn’t the name adorable? Union + Dixie came from her roots in Alabama, to her adventures living in Brooklyn for a while, and now back in Nashville. It’s an “intersection of her southern roots and New York personality.”
The best best part? {Other than the candle, of course} after you’re finished burning your candle, these gorgeous little holders turn into the prettiest of reusable tumblers.
So if you’re looking for the perfect gift or stocking stuffer, or a way to treat yoself… {Duh. Treating yourself is of the highest priority this time of year for all things sanity} We just had to let you know. Her line is amazing, and I want everyone to try what a difference they make. Bonus: It’s also kind of amazing to support a small, handmade business.
Big things. Small packages. And other clichés because they’re true.
All of the scents in the Union + Dixie Collection are inspired by her favorite moments… because nothing is tied to the memory like smell. They’re to “inspire and foster new memories”… let’s just say we can’t stop burning ours. ;}
