a giveaway + gratitude

Update: winner winner chicken dinner!

Congratulations to our winners. 60, 235, + 228.

Congratulations, and I’ll be contacting you shortly!  You just never know when you’ll win! PS. We’ll be having another giveaway, just like this one, on November 1st. So stay tuned! Have a wonderful weekend, everyone!

I’m a big believer that one of the most important things you can do in your life, is to always be thankful. It’s one of the biggest lessons I want my children to walk away with…if it’s remembering to express gratitude after they experience something kind, or thanking their creator for the blessing of being able to breathe that day.

To me, it’s just essential.

From a car wreck, to a tv show, and the seemingly mundane in betweens, like prepping lunches and clothes for their next day of school, I’ve been reminded lately of all the things I really do have to be thankful for.

I kind of felt like this, this summer.

Jamin and I knew a few things were coming up. And I had some things (to say the least) that needed to be completed on time. Because of his job, Jamin was absent all summer, and I was holding down the fort with three children {5 and under} in tow. We pulled 3 spaces together in one month. How did we do it? We’re certainly not super human. We had the help of our incredible friends. And I’m still completely dumbfounded that it actually happened.

Today I wanted to give a quick thank you, to the wonderful people who are also my treasured friends. They just so happen to be a dream team of resources for me, and they head up their own companies. Just like many of you guys do, It takes a lot of gusto to go for it : They work hard to provide for their families, and they take the time on a regular basis to help out their friends. If I could give them super hero names, {as I epically failed at below} they would be on an all star league of fab faves for me. And today, I wanted to take the time to thank them. If you read regularly, they are probably no stranger to you. But these are some of the people that have rescued me on a regular basis at The Handmade Home.

Also known as one of my favoritest people is Tony Oravet. He and his awesome wife are what I fondly refer to as a power couple in the world of production and website building, and I simply adore them both. All four of us go back to the college days or yore, and it’s been exciting to watch this brilliant web developer known as Even Par Solutions really take flight. If you need a website, this is your company. Tony is the man who keeps THH from crashing and other whatnots. In the business for seven years and growing, they have worked with charitable organizations, churches, blogs, small, medium and large businesses, and just about anything else you can think of. If you need a free quote, click here, and be sure to check out their portfolio and facebook page!

Tiffany of Tiffany Interiors never ceases to amaze me with her careful eye and beautiful work. She’s the entire reason we were able to pull our living room together, and was the brilliant eye behind this wonderful piece. She completed the Upholstery Career Professional Program at the Custom Home Furnishings Academy in Charlotte, NC. You can catch some of her work at the Montgomery Antique Galleries, where her awesome pieces there available to upholster. I will now be referring to her as “SupaSeamstress” whenever she calls.

Maybe I should make all of my friends matching capes…maybe they would never speak to me again.

I now fondly refer to britsnap photography as our ‘family photographer’…whether he likes it or not. ;} This super talented artist always takes care of our photos, and we are oh so thankful to have him on our team. He’s a Montgomery based photographer but travels to different parts of Alabama for his clients. Martin is an experienced portrait photographer, available for weddings, families and children. He has an eye, and it shows…be sure to check out his facebook page for more of his fabulous work, or contact him here.

John, aka Welderman, is one of the smartest people I know. And I know lots of smart people, in case you were wondering. I just so happen to be brilliant, and therefore attract other brilliantness. {riiiggghhhttttt} This man builds cars for a living…and runs The Oak Grove Machine Shop in Troy, Alabama. I believe that building cars is the ultimate impressive handmade hobby, and he has rebuilt many. He totally rebuilt his sons truck (above.) Amazing, much? He also collects vintage cars. He’s available for welding projects like the ones you see here, whether its s shelving unit or coffee table…the possibilities are kind of endless.  If you want to get in touch with John, and you live nearby, contact me and I’ll send you his email address. I personally plan to pay him in the future to rebuild a wagoneer. But that’s another story.

Finally, I wanted to take a moment to thank you. I realize this totally isn’t the academies, (pretend I’m standing on stage for a moment in sparkly dress. Wasn’t that purdy? No?) But you guys rock my face off. (Yeah, I still say that) You make this happen each day. This lil blog has already gone places I never fathomed. And I have you to thank for that.

So to say thank you, I’m going a little beyond our usual room redo wannaplay this month, and offering three of you guys a room redo. That’s three winners, guys! Not only that, but I realize that the Holidays are coming up. So these prizes are totally transferrable if you wish to use them as a gift for someone else…We’ll just have an expiration date for use by 2013 ;} {If you win, contact me for details and we will work something out.}

Want to enter? Simply leave a comment below. The giveaway begins now, and ends this Friday (October 21st at 7:00 p.m. CST). I’ll announce the winners, Saturday! {Click here to read more about our inspiration boards.} You really never know when you’re gonna win… so be sure to enter, below!

Love you all. A million thank you’s again, and happy Tuesday!

I just recently had to resign at my job due to back issues. I go in today for an M.R.I. and this would make my week so much better….a bright spot anyway!

    What a great giveaway!

  15. Erin says:

Love, love the superhero names! XD

I would LOVE a room redo! I have a dumb question, though–I’m a new reader–what does the redo entail? I mean, is it an inspiration board, or like you’re coming to someone’s house to actually paint and stuff…? Or sending a superhero someone’s way? 😉

    • Hey Erin! ha! I wish I could send my super heroes everyone’s way! 😉 If you win, you send photos of your room of choice, and I {probably feature it on the blawgh} but do an inspiration board with ideas, etc. that you can do yourself for the space. 😉 Check the links above for examples of past spaces. Hope that helps!

  30. Gratitude is such an important aspect in really seeing and appreciating what you have. I loved reading your post on reflection and thankfulness. I’ve been working with my 5 year old on the same concepts – even appreciating the little things. A room redo would be such a blessing and I would love to gift it to my hard-working, amazing mom! Thank you for all of the inspirational ideas!!

  38. Amanda says:

Ok. I’m going to throw in a little plea for simpathy and hope that it pulls the random number generator my way. We built a house and moved in it last November. And when I say we built it, I mean I was the general contractor. By the time the thing was finally complete, I was too tired to do much in the way of decorating and all those blank walls scare me. Then my family has given me a random array of things they didn’t want anymore so its a pretty random collection of pieces that don’t really fit at the moment. So…please, random number generator…pick me :)

  39. Laura says:

I’m on maternity leave with my new daughter, and had a chance to see you recently on the Nate B Show. That led me to your blog. All I can say is, “Wow!” Thank you!

Can we play from other countries (Argentina)? I’d love to. Thanks!

I would love your ideas to bring some life to my family room.

  46. Amy says:

Ooh, ooh! Me, me, me!! Please, please!! I have a bonus room that’s now a bedroom but needs to be a play room for my 4 year old little boy. We seriously need some inspiring ideas and LOVE your work!!

  47. Teri says:

A room re-do would be unbelievable! I look at your rooms and LOVE your style. I then look at my rooms and shrug – don’t even know where to start!

  48. Vickie says:

We are in the process of wranglin’ the kids stuff to give them a playroom, and take back some space for ourselves! A room re-do is definitely in the works for us! I “found” you on the Nate show when I was working from home recently, and LOVE your design approach … simple, lovely, and fun! Thanks so much. I look forward to checking in each day. Great inspiration can be found on your site and blog. Thanks so much!

I would love some help with my master bedroom. I found some gorgeous fabric about six months ago to make some curtains for my room (they are in the process of being made). My hubby helped me paint the room, but now I have no idea what to do with it! I want a bed and breakfast/cozy room to escape to. :)

  51. Ashley says:

I would love your help and inspiration (and actually really need all your great get-it-done work ethic on projects- what skills and determination).

Thanks for the opportunity. I’m new to your blog and beyond inspired by your work!

  58. meghan says:

ohhh, i’d love your help! what a fun giveaway. our master bedroom is awful. a broken chair for an end table, horribly stained carpet, construction paper tapped to the windows in place of blinds…truly, it’s BAD. i’ve loved all your projects, your input would be great :)

  59. Marie says:

    Thanks!! You are amazing!

  60. Julia says:

We move into our historic house this week!! I’d love to win! Thanks for the giveaway.

I would love a room redo!! With 3 kids and am extremely limited budget I could sure use it! I don’t decorate well at all! I love your stuff and need the inspiration!!

  66. Laura says:

When I saw you on the Nate show I jotted down the name of your site, but as kids would have it, I didn’t get around to logging in until the next day at work. Needless to say, I did not get much work done that morning. You have great ideas and you got me excited about doing things to fix up the house. My family keeps asking “who’s coming over?” Every now and then I say a name just to get them to pick up. ; ) I’m having fun and look forward to checking in on you everyday. Thanks!

  67. Jennifer says:

My dear SIL just told me about your blog and I LOVE it! Having just moved to Montgomery from the Midwest, I would love some room inspriation from a hometown girl. Our new home is in SERIOUS need of some Southern design direction!

  70. Helen says:

Ashley I don’t say this much, but you truly are an inspiration! Because of you I’m getting my own blog going and thinking up projects and activities that I would have only dabbled with in my head before. I truly do appreciate it, so a bit fat thank YOU is in order.

    Fingers crossed!

  87. Jenn says:

Oh how fun! I could always use some inspirational ideas! Especially for our upstairs-we haven’t touched it since moving in (except to gut two rooms in order to properly support the floor…those rooms sit there, still gutted). Not to mention two other bedrooms and a playroom with crazy sloped walls…all upstairs circa 1982. I would LOVE to win!

  88. Caryn Duca says:

New to your site….and the many others you link to (THANKS!!)…would love room make over ideas (have so many to make over)– trying to make that transition from my reds, greens, tans to all those beautiful colors, textures you are so good at — and I am failing miserably! Great inspiration, too bad you can’t send your motivation thru the web! THANKS for these giveaways!!!

  89. Shannon R says:

I need help. After some major furniture rearranging, so the kids’ rooms are more functional, I am at a lost as to what to do with our small and irregular living room. I need more storage. Can’t go “crazy” cause we have the house on the market. I don’t want to put too much effort or energy into things we can’t take with us.

  103. HEidi says:

We are having a baby in January and need to move our two boys into the guest room. I am trying to brainstorm and make it a boy hangout. I haven’t even started yet cause of well…life! 124. Jenni Bounds says:

Not sure how exactly I came across your blog, but I love it!!! Loved seeing your NYC photos… very close to where we live on the upper west side. All the best!

My gosh I would be thrilled! My whole house needs help. I have something going in the family room/kitchen but would LOVE to have some help in ANY other room in our house. :)

  126. I also want my children to learn the be grateful! It’s so important in a world that has an “entitlement” view. — We require our children to write a “thank you” note prior to playing with, or using their birthday gifts. Amazing how quickly they will accomplish that task!

Thanks for offering this great give-away! Count me in!

My husband and I rent and we have a tight budget (with a 7 month old taking priority over say, my dream dining room table). Much of our furniture is gifted from family, including our two large, overstuffed, red couches with giant yellow sunflowers on them that dominate our color palette and small living space. I. Am. Dying. for an affordable redo inspiration board. Help!

I could really use some help! I feel that we have so much in common, I also have 3 kids, the youngest are 18 months apart. I used to live in Alabama, too! Sounds like you are surrounded by a wonderful group of people!! We are a military family and move A LOT! (we are now on our 14th address in 11yrs) Our friends are what make our moves totally awesome! Friends are the family you choose! :)
As for the room inspiration giveaway….can I actually scream “HELP” in a post? Usually I am pretty good at putting a house together (as I said before lots of moves) we almost always rent, can’t paint, etc…etc… Our furniture is very exchangeable. What once was a nightstand in one house is now an end table in another.(most of our furniture was furnished by craigslist, flea markets and maybe a little dumpster diving.) I hate matchy, matchy!!! Anyhoo… the house we are in now has small bedrooms (we have 4 kiddos) so we made the dining room a playroom/kid hang out space….and it looks terrible! We have some great pieces for the room but I am at a complete and total loss of how to make it look good and not just blah. So I would love love love (did I mention love) to win!!! However…I know I am not the only one who wants to win. So do you do inspiration boards? I didn’t see that in your profile? I would love (no matter what) to have your help!

How perfect! A room redo offer and a house that I’m moving in to 12/1 that has a blank slate. I have no idea where to start. I’ve been pulling idea pages from the internet & your website but I can’t seem to pull it ALL together. It’s my great room, connected to my kitchen. I’ve never had this layout before, so I’m guessing they need to, at the very least, complement each other (not match.) Wow – I can’t imagine having someone help me with this – how exciting to dream! I am still “new” to the homemade, refurbish designs. But I totally love it and I’m having a blast with it all!!!! I was raised where you go to a store, pick something out and hang it on the wall. When you get tired of it you sell at a yardsale and go buy new. Now it makes my stomach hurt to buy something new!! lol! So my utility room (which is nice sized) has also turned into my crafting room. Talk about a mess! I need help getting everything a place so I don’t get hives everytime I peek in there! I love your blog and keep up the awesome work!!!!

Love all your beautiful posts! My living room is almost picture perfect but for one wall and an old hutch that needs repainted…my biggest problem is that I love so many different styles and color combinations that I drive myself crazy changing things out – and on a very tight budget! My best “friend” includes the flea market down the street from me!!

    • Tennille says:

Carol Rae…I’m so glad to hear someone admit that they’re own creativity is their greatest and worst asset. I over analyze every design decision and I too drive myself nuts. I’m trying to learn to just “go for it”. So hard. :)

Yes, to be grateful is the best thing – and to pass it onto our kiddos is a gift!

  270. Mary Grace Hawkes says:

  271. Cory M. says:

Saw you on the Nate show and fell in love with your blog! I then, immediately, shared you with my three sisters. Keep up the great work and the fun ideas- and may the Good Lord ‘bless your mess’ as you dig into your closets this weekend (I have yet to see a real-life closet like the ones you drooled over in your post- so, here’s to hoping that you all beat the odds on that!) :)

  272. Connie Akers says:

A friend sent me to your blog knowing I’d love lots of your post. She’s right & I’d love to win the prize. Thank you for sharing your creative energy.

  273. Lisa says:

I love your blog and you post the coolest ideas. I have a room that is beyond desperate for a redo. It has a stone fireplace that is really nice but the rest of the room looks so bad that I don’t even go in the room. Not to mention that it is very dated …. built in 1950 and it also has two HUGE windows that I have no idea what kind of window treatment to use that I can actually afford. I would love to win this as I keep spending all of my time helping everyone but me.

  274. Laura says:

Just found your blog…it’s incredible! Thanks for the chance.

  275. J. Williams says:

I check in with you daily, for inspiration in making my home ‘handmade’… We’ll be relocating across the country soon for my husband’s work, and I know the new house will be begging for some great style. This would be awesome to win! (I can use all the help I can get!) 😉

Thanks for all your great posts and ideas!

  276. Jan says:

I would LOVE a room redo but if by chance I won I know a family that I would give a redo to that needs it more than I do.
    Thanks so much!

  277. Meg Danekas says:

Oh wow, I need an overhaul of our family room!!!

  278. Cheri says:

I love that you are teaching your children something as simple as gratitude- saying thank you and such. That’s fantastic. As a teacher, we don’t see that frequently and are grateful to hear such things from students!
As far as the giveaway, not only would I be grateful, but I’m thinking my 93 year old home would be too- especially the large dining room or kitchen! Both are projects we’re hoping to tackle next summer.

  279. Tania says:
