In our studio reveal post a few weeks ago, a sweet reader, Natasha, said:
…”I love that wooden frame on the whale picture. Do you have any tips on framing children’s artwork and your go-to for frames? Thanks for sharing your journey!”
I think that this very website probably began when I started making frames around our house. I was frustrated by the outrageous costs and limited options, and just wanted to know how I could bring beautiful pieces into our home without spending a fortune. So you may not know that this has been a little bit of our story. And today, I wanted to round up a few of our classic posts and share a few of our favorite tips.
• All About Frames
A few years ago, we had a blast writing this book.
This is definitely where you’ll find our very favorite {and the most} how to’s for building frames. They’re chock-full of inspiration and detailed ideas for your home, and we {oh so biasedly} think you’ll really enjoy them.
We have three other books that coordinate with them when it comes to instantly curated art for the home. The art in them has been contributed by some absolutely amazing artists, and you’ll love their work. So be sure to check them out!
• Sources for Discount frames
Another great way we love bringing in frames for our home, is hunting them down in stores. Our favorite sources are kind of obvious in a painful way, but they may be something you haven’t considered, so we’re glad to share them here! Target, Hobby Lobby, Home Goods, T.J. Max, Michael’s, Wal-Mart are all great places to look. You never know when you’ll find one in the clearance section that altered a little, will be just what your home needed. We love to scoop them up and bring them home, changing them up for a whole new lease on life. {See more on our post below via all things frame flipping – and our book on different ways you can upcycle!}
• Tutorials On Our Site
And of course, we have some more available right here. It’s a few of our fave tutorials we’ve shared over the years for a few diy frames! You’ll see a lot of the same concepts just repeated in different ways, so we hope this helps!
We even talked a little about small accents for a big impact here, where we revisit the topic. Just a little something to get you inspired!
This is a simple frame, for any DIY artwork you might create. We also included this one in case you wanted to purchase one of our own art pieces, but needed a frame, too! The how to is here with all the steps to have it looking just like the ones we build.
Another simple version of it can be found here with how to build a border frame
Make easy handmade layered frames, with this how to, here. It’s a “fancier” version of the whale frame how to that we shared above!

And of course, don’t miss our post from a few weeks ago via our last appearance on Talk of the Town for easy ways to spruce up {existing!} frames!
We hope this helps give you a great start. Please be sure to check out this entire section – art for the home – for more fab ideas to your walls!
As always let us know if we can answer any questions. We hope this helps get you started.
Have an inspired day!

I vacillate between nice clean painted walls and “that is so dull.” Seeing other people’s ideas and gallery walls look so beautiful makes it even harder.
