cozy library
When this sweet family contacted us about a small formal dining room they rarely used in their home, we were excited to put our heads together and come up with a great solution. They were looking for more intention in their use of this space, and when we realized they are a family of avid readers, it was game over for this room. Because we dreamed up something we think they’ll love for years to come…

This space was just asking to be a cozy library. And sometimes, it’s the little spaces that have my heart. Because {yes, I know I say this every time} THIS one just may be my fave addition of the year.

If you’ve stopped by recently, we just shared another library so we love that we have two back-to-back. And we love a good book-loving situation.

We started by planning out a fireplace to anchor the space, along with two bookshelves to flank the back wall. These bookshelves actually store books, so it was fun to see our client deck them out in a colorful array that they’ll really use.

The room was previously wide open, so we also ended up enclosing the space with two pocket doors of frosted glass to let light in without giving up a quiet, private area, to boot. It can be wide open when not needed.

This Kichler Light was the crowning jewel of the space. The gorgeous sconces added another element as well. We love the way the lighting works hand in hand with the moody interior. Like I always say… jewelry to a good outfit.

Here’s another glimpse at the window wall, before.

And how it looks now.
She told me her favorite color is green, and I said “Say less.”

We loved updating the trim, and of course, it wouldn’t be the same without the botanical wallpaper for this classic look. We also love clients who aren’t afraid to listen to us. ;}

The best part is, they already had this fantastic crown molding throughout their home. Changing it to this gorgeous green just helped transform the entire room.

Their space held this doorway to another part of the home, already accessible from elsewhere. Getting rid of it gave them more wall space and allowed them to cozy it up with bookshelves and a fireplace.

We love this oh-so charming transformation.

Their youngest sculpted their dog, aptly named “Charles Barkley” – a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Her creation was so cute, I thought he definitely needed to stay for this little shoot. I would have included the real Charles to have a sit in the space that day, as I always love including the family dogs… but alas I did not check with his agents first, and he was out for a grooming sesh. That one’s on me. I should go back just to include him. He’s an avid shoe collector… I learned that the hard way when I left my shoes at the door.

I actually had a hard time photographing the space, because I kept spying books on my to-be-read or have-read list. You know I love a good thriller / mystery. I cut my teeth on Mary Higgins Clark + Christopher Pike.

We just love this space and the new, beautiful look. This sweet family has told us that the vibes can not be beat at night! Color saturation and smart planning for the win.

They’re using this space as a screen-free zone for their family, and we love that policy.

We can’t wait to hear back from them after their first snow day! This will be the perfect escape. In any season, really.
