When this sweet family wrote in for help with their space, we were more than happy to put our heads together and come up with a few bedroom design ideas to help pull their space into something they will love!
This was a room in their home that had been turned into two spaces with the addition of an extra wall. So they were looking to add some personalization and comfort to their room, while dealing with tricky windows.
This room is something they would like to be more of a sanctuary for both of them, and one where their family gathers often, for snuggles and quiet time. {I think most of us can relate to that one}
They were also looking to relocate their sweet fur babies to their own beds in the space. {Which we can also very much relate to} ;}
These guys had a great start to their space with a furniture arrangement and could probably use a little more of a storage option in their space as well on the functionality front. So we gathered up some ideas that will bring in a lot of texture and interest for their space, as well as dealing with a few of the small challenges.
We believe that these are what make homes interesting. Sometimes it’s just an issue of working with them to make them look more intentional in your space. We also love bringing together a few of those investment pieces, with a little DIY {or with the help of someone who can build a little} mixed in with flea market finds and major stores to give it that one of a kind look.
We believe that the best spaces are made from fun vintage and antique pieces, smart investment pieces, great box store finds and a little DIY. There are also great alternatives to some of the options we present on the DIY side. A little give and take in a space is totally normal and part of the process that makes it so fun and interesting!
So here’s what we came up with:
First things first: We were really torn about changing their room color, because we do love that color choice. But I do think that lightening it up a bit will unify the space and simplify with the other elements we’re bringing in.
1. & 2.
The bedding:
We thought that this bedding brings in a great classic, soft snuggly linen that will be easy to manage and low maintenance. We love the aqua option, combined with some of these shams + these sheets in the fun aqua color as well. {Pale Harbor} We love the idea of two of these accent pillows for a shot of modern color And topped off with this pillow for a touch of character.
A little throw with some great tassels ties it all in at the foot of the bed.
3.
We love the look of this art for in between their two windows {where their large square frame sits now} House of belonging also does custom orders. We just thought this was simple and charming, striking a nice balance between feminine and rustic character.
4.
We love the idea of window treatments like this: Bamboo blinds to warm up the space, along with some swag curtains. {See image two} but we would take that all the way up to the ceiling to help add the illusion of more height of their space, and swag the curtains for a great romantic touch that adds a lot of character. This makes the misplaced windows look more deliberate. {You can get a cheap tie back at your local home improvement store with rope and a little eye hook for the wall}
Just a note: A great alternative would be to add some fringe to a nice linen fabric if they know someone who can sew.
5. + 10.
Another way to distract from the off center window, and give their space more of that collected-over-time look, are different side tables and lamps. Again, to make the space look more intentional. A great chest as a side table would be a fun option. This one is kinda pricey, but to find an antique at the local flea market could serve as great character and another option with storage for the space. We love it paired with an old brass pharmacy lamp. We had one rewired from the local flea market that I use at my desk, or a cheaper alternative with a great aged look at World Market. The original find {on the board} is from here.
We love this side table to add some warmth and character with a lamp and fun shade. And another way to offset that window on the right side, would be to add some chunky art on the left side of the bed as seen in the board. We think a great shadow box would be a fun way to display sentimental additions with the look of a frame that you can change out easily over time. Of course this could also be another flea market find as an alternative as well.
6.
This bed is rattan, and we adore the look, as well as the great natural element it brings into the space. {It’s now sold out, that’s why the link isn’t working.} Also, we found the usual price here. Anything with that same character that holds geometric character in a nice natural finish will bring a great look to the space.
7.
Their dresser has a lot of potential and we would love to see that repurposed. We grabbed the dresser for the inspiration photo just to share the treatment idea. We painted a dresser similar to their finish just last year and had great results with just a little sanding. {Chalk paint is always another option.} We’re still loving it and it was awesome to stretch our budget by repurposing it for the space. We’d love to see it topped off with this awesome brass hardware for a fresh change and vintage vibe. Their mirror hanging there now has a gold edge to it and we’d love to see a quick distressed coat of white on top of the darker places as well to repurpose it… it’s the perfect size!
8.
This rug for a simple geometric vibe and great cushy softness under their feet on cold mornings!
9.
We think that this wall could be used in a great way for wonderful storage and a place for that TV. It’s the perfect blank slate for shelves like this. {Pawley’s Island Posh did such a great job with the real life example!}
11.
Dog beds for their furry family members that tie in beautifully with the rest of the space. They stack easily when not in use and could also pass for floor poufs. If their fur babies don’t chew they would be worth the purchase. {We can’t wait for that day, as we will be purchasing some for ours – right now, they are demolishing ALL OF THE THINGS}
12. & 13.
A great, simple finishing touch would be a mirror like this above the bed, and a great vintage chandelier in brass like this – now sold – but great brass antique lighting are popping up all over Ebay and flea markets – they’re a crowning touch for a space with an elegant flair to tie it all together. We found the one for our studio online as well and it’s been perfect for our space. It’s an inexpensive option that brings in a timeless touch and great contrast with the modern elements.
These are just a few things we chose that we hope bring great comfy layers and interesting character to the space!
Have an inspired day!
