Admittedly, I shared this one last year, and thought it was so fun, someone might want a free download just in time for the start of October! Happy free art downloading, y’all!
This weekend, we were feeling kinda spooky with the rainy days ahead and decided to go all out for a halloween mantel. Because in another week I probably won’t have time. I’ve never really been able to get into fall decor but I can definitely get into halloween. I know I need to calm down, but we decided to share it here in case you’re in the mood to create one of your own, and to give you plenty of time to prep!
As you can see, we borrowed a little inspiration from the beautiful holiday that is Día de Muertos or Day of the Dead. {You can see that original post with all the details here, where we’ve gone all out in the past.}
We thought it was a great opportunity to bring in a little color on our own this year, and teach the kiddos about other cultures like this one, and what they are all about around different holidays. This is actually a beautiful way in which the Mexican people honor their loved ones who have passed on. We adore their amazingly bright and colorful take on things, the way they honor their ancestors, and decided this was a great way to incorporate education into our home, for something with meaning.
So I hand-painted a bright and colorful sugar skull – which makes for beautiful art, but also has a significant meaning as well to their celebrations. I could never explain it succinctly, so if you’re curious about more of this and the history behind it, check it out here. This site is amazing for all things Day of the Dead and the educational component that comes with it.
Want the art to create your own? We decided to provide it as a free printable in years past… Get it here! Just click and download and print!
The kids get so happy when this one reappears each year.
We paired it with our handmade candle holders, some of our rainbow + tassel fabric pumpkins for some fun decor.
Oh, and this little guy here, but he’ll be making an appearance in another fun project I have up my sleeves, soon. We also paired it with these wooden hurricanes {similar ones here} + some black candles because spooky.
Simple is always the name of the game in our house. And of course, what would this room be without our mirrorball? Not sparkly. That’s what. This year, I’m also big into pampas grass…. the fake kind that doesn’t shed. We’re all about that fun texture + drama.
Oh! Curious about the rest of the accessories in this room? Check it all out here.
Thanks so much for stopping by today. Have you started some fall decor at your house? I know. It’s like we drag our feet all summer long, and now we’re diving right into Halloween. Because why not? We’re ready to feel festive around here!
As always, let us know if you use the free printable. We’d love to hear. Share on instagram with the hashtag #thehandmadehomefreebies!
Have an inspired day!
