When Beth wrote in for a few ideas for her Master Suite, we were more than excited to put our heads together for a fun challenge.
She was looking for a retreat for her husband and herself, and very specific about their tastes: She lives in a beautiful farmhouse, but wasn’t looking for a rustic, style. Instead? Hollywood Regency was the name of the game for her style and the look she wanted us to help her create.
A little 1940’s, glamorous Americana anyone? We were all in.
They also had a few requests for the space: She wanted to keep it nice and airy with a nice writing desk and sitting area with ottoman, along with a place for a TV, and some clothing storage.
Which was a little bit of a challenge, but we do love challenges, after all. It’s all in how you style it with smart spatial planning.
We think it’s so important to have a retreat of a bedroom, and loved her ideas. We definitely tried to incorporate all their needs into the space, and so we mocked up an inspiration board to help them get started, along with a furniture plan which is a rough mock up of their floor plan to help with all the placement in the room. Putting together a space is a process, and we tried our best to find budget-friendly things, along with splurges… and alternatives to those splurges, as well. With the hollywood regency style, some of their findings may do better when mixed in with genuine vintage rehabs from a local store or two. Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither were our own rooms, so we hope that this helps when we say that we want this to be a realistic proces.
You never know what you can find that is similar to the items we chose. We hope that they’re happy with the ideas we present today! So without further ado, a Hollywood Regency Master Suite:
4. Bed
I thought that we should start with the bed. This headboard is a the perfect touch of unexpected glamor and romance and we absolutely love the idea of having this in their space. This should help with the whole bulky-headboard conundrum, and even free up a little space for the rest of the room with something so cushy and minimal. It’s a great piece on which to build the rest of the space, and we love the price.
7 + 11 Bedding:
Nothing says classic, nod-to-the-40’s style like this bedding in clean, grey lines. The Linden Grey Border bedding is nice and simple. Paired with the scalloped sheets for a touch of feminine. It’s clean simplicity at its finest.
This pillow brings in some gorgeously deep jewel tones to bring glam to the space.
1. Fan
Fans are the best for sleeping. We say a great vintage fan like this would add style and more cool to the room. It’s a total bonus because it’s not quite the eye sore.
2. Lighting
Her vintage chandelier is perfect. And so are all their accents, along with a vintage starburst mirror they already own, as well. This was just to show something similar with everything else, but we say use both! We would put the starburst mirror over the desk {see desk placement in furniture plan for idea}.
3. Painting
They mentioned a large, abstract painting in the space. – We wanted to give them plenty of options that worked so that she can go from there to pull together the space with a fun piece!
While we think the design elements definitely make it more modern-day hollywood regency, we love the idea of a beautiful oil painting to brighten up and tie together all the colors. {A great price for an original.}
5. Bedside table + lamp
We love the open elegance of these side tables to keep it light and airy, and would do two on each side to bring symmetry to the space. They also leave space to display that requested area for books and accents with a nod to their style without becoming too cluttered in a tight room. They’re on sale now – but we found ones with a similar look here.
Paired with this lamp on each side. Another option would be so peruse flea markets for the perfect pairing – two of our favorite lamps for our bedroom came from a flea market, and we just added new shades – from the same era. I think we paid 14 dollars. ;} That may be an area to save, but also add major one of a kind pieces.
6. Paint Color
We love a simple white color for their room to lighten it up. It’s a great option to go neutral to help tie in all their nice color for the space but keep it light and airy, just as requested.
8 + 9 Chair and Desk
We love this desk for a genuine find and a pop of color. We also found a good second option but with less storage.
Tie it all together with a chippendale chair in poppy or another source for this chair, here.
10. Rug
The Rug – we love the pretty, rich texture in a simple brown color. It brings a nice, neutral undertone for the space with some fun pattern. I would go as large as possible, and while this will be an investment piece, it should also last for years to come, no matter what your style. While we prefer the brown because it actually makes that pattern pop, the gold would also work for that authentic 40’s deco feel.
12. Armoire
We usually try to offer a direct purchasable source for everything, but with a style like classic Hollywood Regency, it can actually be pricier, so it’s worth the hunt for a few things. We think that you should find an armoire like this, and probably locally. Searches like this take time, but you never know what you’ll find on craigslist or in the next town at the local flea market or thrift store for an amazing price. In the corner of their room {see furniture plan} it could house both a TV as requested, and additional space for clothes underneath, with the addition of a shelf or two on the inside. Clothes are up and out of the way, as well as the TV until they need it. And with the doors closed, it brings in a beautiful wood element with the painted and gold and mirrored pieces for a gorgeous contrast. I would highly recommend this find for their space – a lifetime piece that they hold on to.
13. Chair + Ottoman
We love their tufted Chair, but pulled this one in just to illustrate all the pieces together in your space. We would pair it with a simple, small ottoman since space is limited, and this can be moved out of the way when not in use.
14. Curtains
Simple, sweeping floor-to-ceiling curtains like this show off a simple glamor and tie the entire space together. It helps keep things airy and light in such a small space, but also brings in major character. I would do a single panel as long as possible from floor to ceiling on each window, and swoop it to the side. They could also pair with some blackout blinds if you find you need more practicality as far as privacy and light. But we love the affect these have with a simple addition for major touches of airy glamor.
We truly hope that this space and all of it’s options speak to them as something to build from to suit their own style. We strive to listen to each request and then pull together everything for each individual space to meet every need we possibly can for our clients. We think that having a master retreat is the best thing you can do for yourself and partner – it’s a true luxury of a retreat and it’s important. We love helping with spaces like this. ;}
