Janie wrote in and said “…I feel like I’m to that age, where I’m ready to start investing in real pieces for my home. My partner and I are always going back and forth about what is worth investing in. We’ve made some mistakes with buyers remorse so we get nervous. I was wondering if you could share a little about this? I’d love to hear your perspective on what is worth it…”
We can totally relate, Janie, and we’re so glad you asked. We’ve spent many years in this line of work, and, we have regrets… and things we’re really happy about when it comes to our own home. We love a good mix of high/low in a space, as well as vintage and new… colorful and neutral. Every home is different, but some pieces are worth spending a little more. And others pieces are considered investments maybe in a different way than just monetary. {Time, for instance?} Today, we’re sharing investment pieces for your home that you won’t regret!
1. Investment Pieces for Your Home That You Won’t Regret: A Good Sofa
Spring for the one you absolutely love. It doesn’t necessarily mean the priciest one. But maybe it means searching for the perfect fit for you and your family. And then waiting for it. Lead times alone can be difficult right now, so maybe ‘waiting for it’, even includes that. Maybe waiting or it includes the time involved in really hunting just the right one down. But a good sofa is a smart investment piece, that should last you for years to come.
I have been, and always will be, totally in love with chesterfield sofas. True story, this one is now almost a decade old, and still going strong as the main staple piece of our living room. I learned the hard way, years ago, to wait for what you want. They hold classic lines and are absolutely gorgeous for the long haul. And because this one is nicer, we’ve had it cleaned and it keeps looking good… year after year.
This is still one of my fave before and afters! The awesome lights by Kichler lighting definitely help.
We have a few more sofas that we adore in our space, because they have clean lines, they’re comfy, and they clean up easily with spill proof liquids. So they’re just easy and dependable and also look great. Trust us, it’s worth it.
A very close second to the good sofa argument, is a good bed. It should be listed as a bonus topic here. We’re finally scoring an amazing bed {we’ll be sharing more next week!} after all this time and I’m thrilled to have something so nice for our home. There’s something about hitting the older digits and wanting something a little timeless that you won’t be redoing again.
Yes, I’m officially to that age where I think about cleaning things, too. I’ve done my time with all things renovations and replacements. I don’t want to do it again any time soon.
2. Investment Pieces for Your Home That You Won’t Regret: Vintage Finds + Antiques
I have purchased many a vintage {unique} item and never regretted it. Even if I didn’t hold onto it forever, it’s one of the best parts about owning a home. Whether you’re collecting old records or you found the perfect secretary, these pieces are timeless and are some of the best parts about building a real home. Pieces with a story are something you’ll cherish for a very long time. It’s all about layers and meaning.
3. Investment Pieces for Your Home That You Won’t Regret: Art You Love
If you’re purchasing art from a local artist, or an artist that you love… or it’s a found piece, it’s something that adds value to your home because it makes you happy… and it’s an investment you won’t regret.
I think that under this section, I can even add art you’ve created, too. If you enjoy creating for your home, those pieces will be priceless in the future.
I think looking at art like you would a piece of real estate is the wrong way to view it. Life is unpredictable and no one knows what will appreciate over time. {Just ask an avid Beanie Baby collector from 1996} – add things for the home that bring you joy, and you won’t regret it. Period.
Not only that, but you’re usually supporting a small business when you do purchase from an artist. Again, it doesn’t have to cost a fortune to be valuable. It’s an investment in more than one thing, and it does so much more than what’s on the surface.
4. Investment Pieces for Your Home That You Won’t Regret: Old Books
Old books add layers of character to any room. They’re classic staples that withstand the tests of time and only add colorful texture to your bookshelves. Or collections of any kind. There’s something about a passionate collection that add so much interest to the home. This could definitely go in the vintage category above, but that one’s so broad, I wanted to mention it here.
Maybe I’m old fashioned, but in a world of rampant Tik Tok videos with limited attention spans {Let’s be honest, most of the videos don’t even make any sense} the printed word is becoming a rare and classic addition. I think that some of my oldest possessions are in books, and they can be so nuanced and meaningful.
5. Investment Pieces for Your Home That You Won’t Regret: Statement Lights
Truly one of the best pieces you can bring in to make a huge statement in your home, is like good jewelry for an awesome space.
We adore these amazing finds to bring ambience and character to a room. It’s something you won’t ever regret purchasing! They add so much, and look so good.
Of course we love Kichler Lighting for those one of a kind finds… so be sure to check them out for amazing pieces! It’s definitely something you won’t regret for your home when it comes to tons of beautiful character.
We hope this helps give you a good start, Janie! What are some of your favorite finds for the home that you haven’t regretted investing in? We’d love to hear!
Have an inspired day!
