Remember the kitchen redo of all redos?
Brooke and Brian {Also the owners of our fave candle co Union + Dixie} are our friends who go way back. Like, mid-90’s tragic spiral perm, thick eyebrow, chubby cheek days back. A rehab was in the works for some time, and we were thrilled to be a part of this huge redo. So we’re super excited to show you the end product today!
Because this…
Became this.
If you remember after a bit of a debate, these guys decided to work within their own footprint. {No worries, this is just the left side of the house – I didn’t share the rest because they’re saving that for later… also, for the sake of privacy and not having an entire floorpan on the internet…}
But the original floorplan went a little like this:
It’s like we’ve always said: Sometimes, working within your own confines can be your greatest super power.
Because now they have this.
And it’s gorgeous.
We were thrilled to be a part of this collaboration with such creative friends. So what was once their sitting room here, was opened up into part of the larger kitchen area. They took the original skylights, and added more.
Brooke is a full time Nurse Anesthetist by day, but also a culinary expert by night. So they knew they wanted space, not only in the kitchen, but in their pantry for all their cooking needs. {Along with lots of oven space.} The kitchen holds a plethora of gorgeous options.
And around the corner,
Boom.
What was once the view on this wall here,
And then opened up into this room,
Became a part of this.
Their vintage bookcase was a flea market find, and now holds sentimental photos, along with Brian’s latest album release.
Mad talent, we tell you.
This space now holds part of the kitchen, a newly reconfigured powder bath, and laundry room. Along with what will become a workout room. We’ll be sharing more on that, in the future.
This project fearlessly mixed metals, stone, tile, and colors for a one of a kind feel. Along with these great reclaimed wood beams, and shiplap.
Their floors are sourced locally, and blended perfectly with the existing wooden planks and terra cotta tile. It helped with the transition in the kitchen, to the floors that were found underneath the carpet.
The colors throughout the house – Brooke painted most of it by hand to save a little on the project: {All the colors are Farrow + Ball}
• Railings – dark blue color of cabinets
• Shaded White – white on cabinets
• Strong White – walls + ceilings
• Skimming Stone – trim
The table and chairs are a flea market find, along with her slipcovered chairs which were collected over time from Lee.
The countertops are a combo of marble – Lunar Eclipse + soapstone {clearly, our fave}.
Behind this wall revealed some old water damage when it was removed for the new mantel. You never know what surprises you’ll find.
The mantel is custom made limestone with a great local company from a shape Brooke designed.
The hanging plants are a combo of finds via Amazon, Home Depot + Lowes.
The original flooring stayed in the sitting space via the other side of the fireplace.
There are a lot of great nods to some of the original character of the house in different ways.
This wall now hosts a great movie spot for the two of them to enjoy.
They definitely enjoy coffee in here in the mornings! Their favorite neighbors are the deer who stop by constantly.
Their sofa is Mitchell Gold, paired with the pillows via Imagination Home. The lucite side table + metal drum tables kept it light and airy via Worlds Away, and the gold side table on the side is actually from her mom, handed down as a true vintage piece. The rug is via ABC Carpet + Home. Side tables are Phillips Scott. Lamps are a part of the Crest View Collection.
Another piece of original that stayed, is this great liquor cabinet. With soapstone countertops, it wasn’t going anywhere. We love the additional dimension it adds to the space, with a ton of character and a swanky fun chandelier to boot. Yes, please.
Their table was an Aidan Gray find that they’ve had for some time, along with the art that they already owned from a shop in Soho via Rachel Ashwell. The lamp is from Europe to You.
Many of their pieces were re-used, along with fresh finds throughout.
Their kitchen lights are available through Currey + Co
The coffee table is one of our favorite pieces: An old factory belt wheel found at Southern Accents, and had rehabbed into a table with a glass top.
It’s definitely a reclaimed beauty.
The fun abstract art is from Catherine Walker Studio – a friend from college, the paintings are more than just something to bring in some fun color- they have meaning because of who created them.
Of course their entire home smells like their fabulous candles, but a few wild flowers never hurt either.
Sink + Faucet are Kohler + Newport Brass
The hardware is a great etsy find which totally made the cabinets. Along with Worlds Away.
She also has a great collection of bowls and cutting boards that add to the funky european feel. We loved bring in a little color with what she already owned.
Their fur baby, sweet Como definitely approves of the design!
There’s more little details in the future that we can’t wait to share.
Stay tuned! It will be worth it.
It was such an honor to be a part of this not-so-little collaboration with such talented friends.
It was a bit of an undertaking, to say the least.
Have an inspired day!

I was just thinking about this yesterday, and bam…finished product!
What. Glorious. Work.
I love seeing what you do!
I’m thinking about the post you guys just did on “no commercial breaks” and then I see this. It’s so easy to look through all the pretty photos and take for granted the work that went into it. What a great end product, amazing work, and amazing client as well. I’ve been on the other side of this and know that sometimes the client dictates the end product – and sometimes that’s really bad. so great collaboration guys. I can’t wait to see what you do in Nashville.
Truly a beautiful space!
What are these people doing in my house? The dog can stay, everybody else out. This is beyond jaw dropping. I can’t stop gawking, salivating and coveting. The kitchen floors are the show stopper. Great, great, great visions.
I live in a period re model log home with additions. My newest remake is a large kitchen. My husband and I have been at a stalemate. He wants white/grey granite for countertops. I love soapstone for my countertops. The standoff has lasted two years with junk pieces of laminate for tops. I believe granite will be too fancy for a log cabin. His friends (?????) say that soapstone will be maintenance trouble. I can win the disagreement…it is my kitchen but I would like sound experience from someone that is not selling either. I advise that I am a messy food artist (!?!?). Please help the situation with experienced advice. I am super tired of random pieces of countertops. Thank you.
Hey Carol! So funny you should ask, because we wrote an entire post about soapstone here. Let me tell you… we treated it a bit delicately at first but there was really no reason to. We absolutely love our soapstone and I couldn’t recommend it more. I hope this helps with everything in the post and that you guys can come to a decision for your home! Let us know if you have more questions!
