We were thrilled to be able to do a little Q + A with Wayfair the other day, and it’s the perfect way to ring in the first ‘real’ week of the new year.
The Winter Edit is a collection of advice, inspiration, and trends for the upcoming season. Today, we’re all about 2021, with bright eyes and bushy tails renewed for the year. I guess you could say… big hopes, realistic expectations. Today, we’re discussing where we see all things design headed for the new year. We were oh so happy to dive in with a few questions and a fun round up of ideas!
Wayfair:
What kinds of design projects are you working on this season? Do you find that design challenges shift from season to season?
The Handmade Home:
Because people have spent more time at home this year, we’ve had a surge of clients coming our way, looking to make improvements on their home. Now, more than ever, we all need our spaces to be a respite from the chaos around us. And now, more than ever, people are doing just that to make their homes a true retreat. They’re taking the opportunity to work on those new years resolutions they just haven’t had a chance to get to last year, so from kitchens to bathrooms and everything in between, we’re all about helping them create a better space. We love helping people love where they live.
As far as challenges from season to season, we find that most design challenges right now, are all about those with what is available. Because we’re asked to pivot often as designers, it’s important to keep our clients informed on deadlines, availability and more. We tell everyone it’s good to be flexible in times like these, so right now, it’s all about working with what we can.
Wayfair:
Are there any design trends or traditions you are loving right now?
The Handmade Home:
People are all about creating a dream space within their own homes. They’re also skipping the rules to make the format work for them. Of Course we love this the most, since our literal motto is “We don’t believe in the dream home, we believe in your home.” We believe in doing what works.
In general, we’re seeing trends lean toward all about ease and comfort and building a true retreat. Most people have been staring at what they don’t like, for far too long, and what we love the most about right now, as that this past year lit a fire underneath homeowners to finish what they never noticed or had time to work on, before. We love holding client’s hands through the process, and helping them realize the potential in each space.
Wayfair:
What are a few ways people can spruce up their homes with decor while on a budget?
The Handmade Home:
Some of the easiest ways to spruce up your home, is to switch out accessories. These are usually the smaller ticket items, and can bring big impact to a space. You never know what a fresh pillow or rug can do, to breathe new life into a tired room.
I’d also say purging can go a long way to make a room feel fresh. Then, adding smaller items to help keep it organized are a big game changer. Now more than ever while we’re all staring at our homes, is really time to get that clutter under control. Just refreshing a system with a new basket, storage bench for shoes or desk organizer can be a real game changer.
Also, don’t be afraid to just mix it up. That item on your shelf that’s collected dust for a year, may look awesome on your mantel instead. And the candlesticks in one room can now be moved to your coffee table… shop your house and mix it up for a fresh feel. The minimalism of January is the perfect opportunity to work with a clean slate.
