*Pssst… there’s a giveaway below – don’t miss it!*
Our oldest turned 14 this year. It’s a a whole new phase for us, but a really fun phase. Helping him transition from a kid into adulthood has its challenges for sure, but the joy in watching him learn and grow is one of the highlights of being a parent. From taking on school responsibilities, helping with meals around the house, social obligations and learning how to do home projects, and even to learning to operate our battery-powered lawn tools to very soon… driving.
That sound you heard was Ashley fainting.
This has been a fun phase. He’s so curious about everything and soaking up all the information as he learns new things. I’m taking him camping and rafting on the Olympic section of the Ocoee this summer. To say I’m a little excited he’s picked two of my favorites hobbies, is an understatement. #winning
But it’s not just fun activities he’s curious about.
Because there was a little excitement over a new box that had arrived the other day. He says he can’t wait to use the headlights and cut the grass at night. I have a feeling we might have some crop circles when I wake up in the morning. YOLO.
He was super curious this past year when he asked why we’d made the transition to battery-powered tools, from gas.
It was a fair question after such a change. Weren’t battery-powered tools ‘inferior’, with less power, run time and performance? Three things that are all super important. So for the last several months, we’ve had a little hands-on experience around our house to tackle these questions, and more.
Run Time:
With an acre yard, run time is super important. No one wants to sacrifice the length of time a tool works. And of course, the myth is that a gas-powered tool will in general, run longer than a battery-powered tool. This was really the first thing that always drove me towards gas-powered tools because in my experience they did have a better run time. It’s funny how parenthood works: children start asking questions which prompt us to learn more.
Greenworks battery-powered tools have flipped traditional truth this on its head, and when compared to their equivalent gas-powered tool actually has the same, if not longer, run time. Plus, the time it takes to pop in a new battery versus break out the gas can and refill the tank is dramatically shorter.
Not to mention the gas smell and spills.
Power:
The chainsaw might have been his favorite, and the perfect tool to test the power question. In retrospect, said chainsaw probably also advanced his interest in campfires. Either way, he saw first hand that the new Greenworks 60-volt chainsaw has more than enough power to cut through any tree trunk. When tested, it has 20% more torque and cuts faster than a 42cc gas-powered chainsaw.
He also loved the fact that it was lighter than our neighbor’s traditional gas-powered chainsaw, and enjoyed watching the start-up process our neighbor went through compared to how easy it was to start the Greenworks chainsaw.
While we waited on our neighbor to gas his up and go through the start-up process, I explained to Aiden that the Greenworks chainsaw lasts longer and cuts better because of the brushless motor technology which allows for the motor to sense the correct power needed, and adjust accordingly.
Performance:
You can probably imagine where we will land on performance?
But as I explained to him, performance is more than just how well it does the job. Honestly, I’d say that both gas-powered tools and the Greenworks option both do the job they are intended to do. However, there is so much more to performance than getting the job done. The Greenworks blower was an easy way to show him how they outperform in some major categories.
• Better for your health – no noise pollution to cause damage to your hearing, and no inhaling gas fumes or exhaust.
• Ease of use – no mixing gas, no chains to pull to start the product. They’re lighter weight to reduce muscle stress and absolutely no winterizing.
• Safety – if a traditional gas mower hits a hard object like a pipe, it will simply power through it causing damage to the machine and possibly the operator. Greenworks technology powers the mower down, not allowing it to plow through. This is safer for the machine and the operator.
• Money saving – In the long run, there is no gas to buy, and the repairs of battery-powered products are significantly less. There is far less to break or maintain. And everyone loves to save money.
Now to the really good stuff!
