Every year, we get the same question: “What are some of the top design trends for the new year?” And every year, if we’re being completely honest, it kind of wears us out. Let’s skip the bossy suggestions. {I.E., some writer telling us something is ‘in’ or ‘out’.} We don’t believe that wise, happy design choices in a home you love, will ever be “out”. Instead, we’re focusing on this question in a different way, to share what we’ve seen a lot of in the past few years with clients and homes, that are sure to continue strong into the new year. So without further ado, the top home design trends of 2022! {Our take.}
{And just to set the record straight, white kitchens will always be in.}
1. Top Home Design Trends of 2022 : Home Offices
Yep. They’re coming on strong, and not going away any time soon. Why would they? We’ve loved creating some recently, so much so that we’re starting to rethink the future of a real studio / office set up in our own home. But more on that in the future, since we’re still wrangling an addition in the middle of covid and multiple snowstorms over here. Clients have really focused on working from home, and what that means for them, indefinitely. The pandemic has really changed the landscape of working and what that can mean. It definitely helps to create a space of your own.
You may remember when we took this long, formal living room, and changed it into a client’s office space. Our one regret? Not using the skeleton in the reveal.

2. Top Home Design Trends of 2022 : Flex Spaces
Continuing with the whole apocalypse-chic theme, spaces that can fulfill multiple uses and work hard, are growing from demand. They’ll never go out of style. We’ve taken on countless basement redesigns now, and we’ve seen that it never hurts to add square footage. We have more coming at ya in the next few months. But spaces that can fulfill multiple needs, from entertaining to workout rooms, study spaces and more… are kind of amazing to have.
So think through how you can improve that existing space to make it work harder for you.
3. Top Home Design Trends of 2022 : Kitchens + Baths
Are definitely always at the top of the list. People home more = wanting to improve their spaces, so kitchens and baths are always going to be on that improvements list. They’re classics… so naturally everyone wants to update that space.
These are the areas that automatically add more value to the home in terms of real estate too, beyond expanding your square footage. People always seem to sweat that question, so it’s always good to see what you can update, even if it’s not your forever home.
Our motto if you’re on the fence about it: You may as well enjoy it while you have it. {AKA, don’t let the list of “what ifs” hold you back.
4. Top Home Design Trends of 2022 : Outdoor Spaces
Maybe this one should have come first? From decks to cabanas, hideaways and more, we’ve seen a huge uptick in outdoor rooms for clients… and we love that they want to embrace those spaces. It can mean so much for a home, and opportunities for spreading out.
Outdoor spaces are amazing, and can add so much when done right.

5. Top Home Design Trends of 2022 : Rooms with Purpose and Meaning
Pointing back to our at home-more-often theme, people just want to love their spaces. So from fun wallpaper prints {which aren’t going away any time soon} to sustainable sources and items with sentimental meaning… it’s helping clients love their home, that we love so much. And that never goes out of style.
We hope that this little post serves as just a friendly reminder to do what you love, and how you can improve your home to work best for you… not basing your choices on which paint color is “in”.
We think its about thinking more outside the box and taking in the grand scheme of things. The meaning of what really makes a home, YOUR home.
What are some trends you see coming at us in the new year? We’d love to hear!
Have an inspired day!
