It’s 2021, {blowing my mind that it’s almost 2022} and I’m still kind of shocked that my dryer doesn’t have a folding option. Can the people in charge get with it? Side-eyeing you, Nasa people, since at this point I’m guessing that’s what it would take. But the good news is that more than ever, homeowners are viewing things differently, making their home work hard for them. Thinking outside the box when it comes to dining spaces, is an awesome area we’re seeing more and more clients, ready to dive in with design help. Making sure that the space serves them means thinking creatively with dining room ideas. Grandma’s traditional dining room of generations’ past was wonderful, but in the modern era it’s great to see people “breaking the rules”, and doing what works for them, in their space. People are gathering in homes again and what better way to celebrate than with a space just for that? Here are a few of our best dining room ideas: things to consider to spruce up that space!
1. Dining Room Ideas: Optimize Seating
Gone are the formal dining room spaces of the past, because homeowners are taking advantage of valuable square footage in creative ways. Once upon a time, people felt stuck when it came to the traditional table and chair set up, never used unless it was a special holiday. Elements like longer tables for more gathering options, or tables that fold up and out of the way when not in use, and diverse seating are all smart approaches. Narrow chairs for better seating in a tight space, drop leaf trestle tables that can be stored out of the way or expanded for bigger crowds, and banquettes for anywhere that can offer cozy seating with much more storage, are all great ways to think creatively. Don’t be afraid to break the rules when it comes to rethinking the dining room.
2. Dining Room Ideas: Mix it Up
Matchy-matchy still isn’t really a thing anymore {thank goodness}, and not only in the furniture department of dining rooms, but just about anywhere. So this is your gentle reminder that if you don’t feel like overhauling your dining room right now, you can always go for all things tablescapes for a fresh touch. Mixing and matching the table for the season can be fun and inspiring for both family and guests. Every day can feel like a celebration when it comes to tableware. It’s good to remember to layer it up and have fun.
A few things to consider with all things dressy tables, are items like table runners to create a softer backdrop {especially if you’re not crazy about your table}, and chargers to reinforce varied interest. Bring in color and different patterns to mix it up, and mix modern with classic meaningful pieces too, for an enriched gathering spot. It’s really fun to collect pieces over the years, and use what you love on a whim. You officially have {and always have had} our ‘permission’ to have some fun.
3. Dining Room Ideas: Go Colorful
Don’t neglect the potential of color and pattern in a dining space! In a world of neutrals, the power of a colorful environment to encourage gathering and great conversation, is often forgotten. From intimate spaces to large rooms, it’s an awesome opportunity to express your personality in really great ways.
Colorful wallpaper in great hues is never a bad combo. An abstract painting is smart, without the commitment while still being big on style. A stylish credenza in a fun pop of color, or a family hand me down in a new shade and a new lease on life, is always a great fun addition. You never know what will make the perfect piece! A little color is always a great way to go.
4. Dining Room Ideas: Multifunctional Spaces
As we mentioned above, the number one need we’re seeing with clients is that homes need to work hard for their owner. If this past year {going on two now} taught homeowners anything, it’s that a dining room can also be an art studio, school space, makeshift office, and more. Beyond optimizing that seating, mix it up with pieces that work hard in the dining room, and also double as something else. If you need it to be a multifunctional space: {Just a few ideas to get those wheels turning!}
• a wall mounted chalkboard in the day, can be a desk at night.
• simple, unassuming armoires can double as valuable art supply storage.
• stylish credenzas also hold school supplies.
The possibilities really are endless.
5. Dining Room Ideas: Think Beyond the Expected
No formal dining room? No problem. Consider bringing the indoors out for an exciting new space and all things dining alfresco. A dining area that also works as part of the kitchen, or going all the way with a new addition to the home, are creative ways of thinking through the traditional dining space. Even opening up those spaces by knocking out that oppressive wall {just make sure it’s done right, and not a support wall in your home} are all fun ways to think in the home. Thinking creatively can help you love where you live, now.
A few ideas that help with storage, alternative dining, and more, would be transforming the patio for the perfect gathering spot when more space is needed, smart storage in tight areas, or adding more counter space to serve up guests. You never know what solutions you can come up with. If you’re feeling stuck, remember that sometimes your greatest weakness can be your greatest strength.
