Lynn wrote in and said, “I’m always torn about bathroom floors. I’m currently looking for some ideas on what to use. Have any inspiration on ideas when it comes to all things floors in the bathroom? What are the rules?”
Bathroom flooring inspiration is a great place to start when it comes to planning the bath, because they literally dictate what’s possible from the ground up. From new builds to renovations, they certainly don’t have to be limiting, and homeowners are thinking outside the box when it comes to creative solutions. With pattern to thoughtful planning for an ADA bath, here are some great bathroom flooring inspiration to get those wheels turning!
1. Bathroom Flooring Inspiration: Go Bold for Pattern
Floors are often the forgotten fifth wall when it comes to the bathroom. Many homeowners default to basic when it comes to the bathroom floors, but they’d be surprised that they can still play it safe and bring in some bolder patterns in neutral tones. These particular tiles add a touch of fun to a girls’ shared bath, that will easily grow with them over time because of that classic twist. Argyle is such a fun preppy vibe that sparkles in the light.
2. Bathroom Flooring Ideas: Go Bold in Small Spaces
This half bath is a testament to the points above, but with smaller spaces. Little bathrooms are a great opportunity to go big, for an awesome impact when it comes to floors. Just because it’s small, doesn’t mean it has to perform that way. Keep it big and bold in those small spaces, and you definitely won’t regret it.
3. Bathroom Flooring Inspiration: Classic With Contrast
Simple is always a beautiful solution for classic, timeless spaces that will honestly never have to be updated.
It’s always a smart choice to go with classic solutions! What we love about this option is that it can be paired well with a touch of modern, and still feel up to date and timeless, no matter what scale or application. This tile paired with a beautiful clawfoot tub and a modern touch on the walls makes for a pretty bathroom, all finished off for a definite classic feel.
Timeless.
4. Bathroom Flooring Inspiration: Geometry with No Slip Lines
Not all spaces are remodeled equally, and this particular bathroom was matched up over time, with existing shower tile.
The challenge was to bring in complementary lines, while also offering contrast. This flooring made for a great geometric solution and a slightly modern feel, especially when paired with a handmade look in the subway tile. The grout lines are an additional bonus, because it’s a great element to consider for added insurance when it comes to no slip surfaces. If you’re really concerned about fall hazards, not only should you consider the materials {more on that below} but the amount of grout used in a design.
5. Bathroom Flooring Inspiration: Seamless Floors
Whether for medical use or just preference, seamless bathroom floors are always a great idea with zero entry showers. This particular bathroom added custom tile work for a gorgeous, timeless border all the way around the room. An ADA, barrier-free bath met the needs of this homeowner, while remaining classic and timeless. And the bath below kept the flooring simple, ultimately which made the space feel larger.
6. Bathroom Flooring Ideas: Add Color
Homeowners are sometimes hesitant to add too much color to floors, for fear that they’ll grow tired of it all too soon. We totally get this, but subdued hues in a fun pattern are always a safe solution. It also allows a little room to show a little personality.
This bathroom packs a subtle punch while remaining soft on the eyes with a timeless touch.
7. Bathroom Flooring Ideas: Go for a Natural Stone
If you’ve been following along for a while, then you know that we’re big fans of natural stones. They make such a beautiful, natural texture, and feel amazing under foot.
Just like the timeless flooring above, this one adds such a gorgeous, subtle element. It’s definitely a great option to consider!
8. Bathroom Flooring Ideas: Cover it
Sometimes homeowners just aren’t happy with their bathroom floors. Sometimes, they can’t be replaced right away because it’s oh so fussy to do so, when you’re not ready to take on a total rehab of a space. Our solution: Cover it! We’re big fans of temporary fixes until you’re ready for the real deal. Work with the things that aren’t working, and disguise with colorful rugs, stick on tiles, and bright accents, until it’s possible to replace those floors.
Here are a few thing to consider when it comes to the “rules” for choosing tile for bathroom floors:
Will it be installed in the bathroom? What about the shower?
This is probably the most important question you can ask when considering a plan for your bathroom. Determining if it’s safe to use on the floor, or the actual shower so that you can use it, is the most important thing you can do before committing to a tile. We say that finding floor tile can sometimes be the hardest, so we source that, first.
The suggested use will be included in the information. Just be sure to investigate thoroughly before you take the plunge.
What about who will be using it?
Pay attention to the suggested use before purchasing. And then determine what you’ll be using it for. Is this a high traffic area? How will it stand up over time? Is it commercial grade? {If it’s rated for commercial use, it’s usually a safe bet it’s of the highest standards when it comes to lasting quality and low maintenance.} It’s all about considering the little things.
What is the suggested care of this tile?
By default, a natural stone like marble or basalt will always be a safe bet for the floor. But will it need to be sealed over time? What’s the suggested cleaning of this product? Is it going in the shower or just on the floor, because that affects it all, too.
What is the PEI rating?
When it comes to manufactured porcelain, it’s rated on a PEI scale. Those tiles with a PEI (Porcelain Enamel Institute) hardness rating of 4 or 5 are good for home and business traffic. So pay attention to that PEI rating when searching for a floor tile.
Of course, there are pros and cons to using whatever you choose in a bathroom. This is just a great reference given to a tile based the hardness of its glaze. It’s determined by the manufacturer using a standardized test, and the results will determine the proper usage for the tile.
Just be sure to pay attention when you’re searching for that perfect tile, for a great long lasting product.
