Having children is a lot like seeing yourself grow

Having children is a lot like seeing yourself grow up, all over again. I know they're most definitely their own people, so perhaps that's an oversimplified, slightly self-centered way of putting things. I think as parents, we naturally tend to swing the pendulum back to provide for them the things we found lacking in our own childhoods. But I'd be in full-on denial if I didn't admit I sometimes live vicariously through my children. We all do that, just a little.

Included in one of the storage containers, next to those baby clothes, was my prom dress circa 1997. No, I don't know how or why I've held on to it all these years. But my middle wanted to try it on. And when she did, I had a moment.

I stood in that dress when I had hopes and dreams in a world with endless possibilities for my future. I had no idea where I was going... I just knew it was going to be good. Or at least I hoped so. Now my own daughter is old enough to wear it, with her very own take on hers.

Time is fleeting and it's only going faster. Forgotten storage boxes as time capsules, sweet memories and the beginning of new chapters. All on our site today.

For those new faces around here, we thought it might be good to pop in and say hey! We're Jamin and Ashley from The Handmade Home. We run a design and remodeling business in Franklin, Tennessee, just outside of Nashville. We've been sharing a new series on our site: Things your Designer Wants you to Know... And a sweet reader, Jennifer, wrote in with a great question!

Jennifer wrote in and said, "...We're in another state from you, and looking to hire a contractor for work on our home. We have heard so many horror stories, and had some bad experiences in the past. We were wondering if you could share some red flags to look for? I'm not sure where to begin..."

We figured this was the perfect transition to dive in with a tough topic that really needs to be said 'out loud'. But first, let us say: not all contractors are "bad" just like not all designers are prima donnas. 😂🫣

Some contractors are our besties, because they know how to do a good job and communicate well, and basically don't suffer from main character syndrome. They want us to share these things, too. But we've also had experiences with others who should have their license taken away for putting others in danger.

So, we've seen enough to share some red flags when it comes to contractors. Unfortunately, there's a reason the horror stories are a real thing. We want to help you avoid that.

This primary bath is definitely a special one because we adore the way that it turned out for our sweet client.

She was looking to create something from a 1974-ish fixer upper, located right around the corner from us. Our home could basically be siblings with her home, {totally different floor plan, but definitely the same old-school feels} and the bathroom hadn’t been touched since its inception. We feel like we returned it to its original potential with a little touch of that vintage vibe. We also brought it into 2023 with a modern Charleston twist, to reflect our client.
